President's Diversity Award for Academic Department

Provost Marcia Welsh and the Dance DepartmentThe department of Dance, under the leadership of Chairperson, Dr. Susan Haigler, has embraced best practices to further their commitment to Towson's diversity initiative. The presence of diverse faculty and staff is a visual reminder to students that diversity is to be embraced. Dance's curricula and instruction has moved from the traditional technical on BFA program to an advocate for "Dancing for a Lifetime." Bringing such works as "Continuous Replay," " Witness," "The Grandmother Project," and "Heaven in View: Narratives of Women living with HIV," embodies democracy, acts of humanity, reflections and memories of loved ones, and movement workshops helping to express concerns and emotions through movement. Collaboration with Chinquapin Middle School has enabled the Dance Education methods' class to teach 6th grade boys science. While the Dance Education and Policy class emphasized empowerment to 7th grade girls this past semester.

President's Diversity Award for Administrative Department

Deb Moriarty and Photographic ServicesSince 1996, under the leadership of Mr. Kanji Takeno, the Photographic Services Department has continuously endeavored to portray Towson University's true sense of community. Photographs that highlight the university's warm, welcoming, embracement of all cultures, ethnicities, talents and lifestyles spill out over the university's website and numerous publications.

A sense of pride being grounded in respect and inclusion -this can be evidenced through the pictures chosen by Photographic Services to represent Towson University in promotional materials that are meant to attract diverse applicants - whether it be student applicants or Faculty/Staff applicants. Kanji and his assistant, Desiree, work with campus departments to ensure that images successfully portray the vision of Towson University as "Maryland's Metropolitan University."

President's Diversity Award for Faculty (general)

Provost Marcia Welsh and Dr. Kay Arwady

Dr. Kay Arwady Broadwater has been a part of the full time faculty of the Department of Art since 1996. ln 1994, Dr. Broadwater founded a partnership with New Song Academy that links university students with urban youth to explore visual arts together, break down stereotypes, learn about human commonality and difference, integrate theory with practice and encourage the youth from Baltimore's Sandtown community to gain a vision for attending college. This program has expanded and has become part of the curriculum in three TU departments.
In 2008, Dr. Broadwater traveled to Liberia and conducted professional development in war torn conditions with 2l teachers in the area of arts education. Kay is currently the Curriculum Expert for the Arts Integration Institute and has been involved with the Crossing Borders/Breaking Boundaries program at College Park, the Multicultural Task Force, the Holocaust and Human Rights Committee and is on the Faculty Advisory Committee for the Asian Arts &Culture Center. In 2010, Dr. Broadwater was named the Maryland Art Educator of the Year as well as Student Government Association Faculty Member of the Year.

President's Diversity Award for Faculty (research)

Provost Marcia Welsh and Dr. Theresa AdkinsDr. Theresa Adkins joined the Department of Secondary Education in the College of Education at Towson University in the fall of 2006, just three days after graduating from the University of Florida with a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction. Since that time, Dr. Adkins has participated actively in the Towson University community by co-sponsoring with Dr. Lena Ampadu the annual National Council of Teachers of English African American Read-ln. She has served on the College of Education's Diversity Committee and the Teacher Education Executive Board.
Dr. Adkins conducts research on culturally responsive English teachers and on learning environments that facilitate academic growth among students from marginalized groups. This research builds understanding of diversity as well as provides practical strategies for teachers to implement in the classroom. She infuses culturally relevant pedagogy across her courses which in turn grounds classroom instruction in a philosophical approach that meets the needs of all students, regardless of their background or prior experiences.

President's Diversity Award for Staff Member

Provost Marcia Welsh and Mr. Lonnie McNew

Mr. Lonnie McNew, Senior Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for Enrollment Services is committed in thought and action to making Towson a more diverse and accessible University by closing the graduation gap between White and minority students. Lonnie was responsible for developing and implementing Towson University's Top l0% Scholars Program. The program guarantees admission to any Baltimore City and County public school student that graduates in the top l0% of their high school class. In the first year of the program the number of Baltimore City students enrolled at Towson rose from 34 to 98, a nearly 3000% increase! The Top l0% Scholars Program has cultivated strong ties between Towson University and Baltimore City Schools. As a result of this program, Towson University has become a school of choice among Baltimore city school students.

In order to address the needs of the TU students in the Top l0% scholars Program and to strengthen their ability to be retained and graduated from TU, Lonnie assembled representatives from across campus to institute programs to assure continuous commitment to these students. In support of the University's goal to graduate all admitted students, Lonnie established the "S3" Program (Support for Student Success). The S3 Program, a program for "at risk" students, orients participants to the campus environment and provides support through study skills and mentoring sessions. He has collaborated with various campus offices to implement block scheduling. Block scheduling ensures that the students matriculate as part of a cohort and help them feel that they are part of a community. Resources have remained available to these students as a result of Lonnie's attention to these programs. Lonnie has also served on the group that developed TU's Achievement Gap Plan.

President's Diversity Award for Student

Deb Moriarty and Courtney Cox Ms. Courtney Cox is a TU student that is well-known and well respected on our campus by both peers and university employees. Courtney serves as the Director of Diversity Outreach for Towson University's Student Government Association.
Ms. Cox has served as president of the Latin American Student Association and as a Senator of the Student Government Association. She has partnered with the TU Queer Student Union to increase awareness of teen suicides caused by bullying.  Courtney is creating a Campus Climate Survey that will be utilized for the purpose of assessing how safe and welcome students feel here at Towson. Ms. Cox organized "Diverse City", a forum for students, faculty and staff to discuss existing campus issues and to develop strategies to resolve these issues. As a member of TU's Diversity Action Committee and the Campus Climate Work Group, Ms. Cox is developing and supporting initiatives to establish and maintain a campus climate that is welcoming to and inclusive of all members of our campus community. Supporting the institutionalization of diversity at TU through her many activities, Courtney's commitment to enhancing the experience and understanding of diversity is to be commended.
