Deans to recognize seven distinguished alumni

TOWSON, Md. (May 1, 2012)—Francis S. Soistman Jr. '79, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Jessamine Healthcare Inc., will receive the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award next week for his involvement on numerous educational boards, his active support of Towson and his significant contributions to the health care industry.


The TU Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually to an alumnus or alumna who exemplifies continued professional development, success in his or her field, and a commitment to Towson University. The award has been conferred since 1958.

Six other TU alumni will also be recognized at the Alumni Association banquet on Thursday, May 3, in the West Village Commons Ballroom.

Soistman is responsible for business development through acquisitions in the health care services sector and all aspects of internal business operations at Jessamine. He serves on the TU Board of Visitors and University System of Maryland Foundation Board of Directors, among many others.


The following alumni will receive the Deans’ Recognition Awards for 2012:

  • Lone Tidemand Azola ’68, president of Azola Building Services LLC, a property management company recently given the 2010 Preservation Award by the Maryland Historical Trust, will receive the award from the College of Liberal Arts.
  • Michele Cooper M.D. ’91, board-certified plastic surgeon in New Orleans and founder of the Michele Cooper M.D. Scholarship for Anne Arundel County students interested in math and science, will receive the award from the Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics.
  • Frank Mezzanotte ’73/’75 was instrumental in the formation of the Central Maryland Homeland Security Educational Alliance that encompasses six Maryland school districts and will receive the award from the College of Health Professions.
  • Steve Mister ’85, president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), was a member of TU's Speech & Debate team and contributed to its top 10 national ranking two years in a row. He will receive the award from the College of Fine Arts and Communication.
  • Ken Moreland ’78, chief financial officer, treasurer and vice president of T. Rowe Price Group Inc., will receive the award from the College of Business and Economics. Moreland has been an avid promoter and supporter of philanthropic giving to Towson University, serves on TU's Board of Visitors and previously served as president and treasurer of the Towson University Foundation.
  • Tom Proffitt ‘69, associate dean of the College of Education, has served on countless university, state and national initiatives, and has been long recognized by peers for his work with professional development schools. He will receive the award from the College of Education.


The Deans' Recognition Awards are presented annually to TU alumni who have distinguished themselves through superior professional growth and accomplishment in their fields. One recipient is selected by the dean of each of the university’s colleges. Honorees represent commitment and excellence in a diversity of professional disciplines.
