TU and Goucher College welcome students back in uptown Towson
5K run and block party kick off TU's LaborStay Weekend
TOWSON, Md. (August 29, 2006)—The XTERRA Towson Block Party Scramble 5K will be held September 1 from 7 to 11:30 p.m. as part of LaborStay Weekend festivities for TU students. The event is sponsored by Towson University, Goucher College, the Towson Chamber of Commerce, Charm City Run, Black and Gold Catering, Starleigh Entertainment, and the Baltimore Collegetown Network.
The 5K race begins at 7 p.m. on TU's Burdick Field and finishes in the heart of Towson at Pennsylvania Avenue. Race-day registration begins at 5:30 p.m. on Burdick Field. The entry fee is $20 with early registration ($10 for current Towson University and Goucher College students) and $25 on race day ($15 for students). Register online at www.charmcityrun.com, www.active.com, or via a mail-in registration form. For forms, directions, more information, or to volunteer, contact Kelly Dees at 410-308-1870 or firstname.lastname@example.org. There is a limit of 500 entrants.
Following the race, a portion of Pennsylvania Avenue will be shut down to let students, community members, and merchants celebrate the start of the new school year at the "College Night on the Town" block party. Participating retailers will offer discounted food and beverages, and various local businesses will set up informational tables. The block party will feature live performances by three local bands—Layhill (alternative/funk), Half Nasty (rock), and Jah Works (modern reggae). Music begins at 7:30 p.m. and continues until 11:30 p.m. All students are welcome to attend—participating in the 5k is not required to enjoy the block party!
