Countering counterfeit labels

'There’s a bit of James Bond in every label,' says NaturalCheck president

July 18, 2008 (Towson, Md.)— NaturalCheck, a member of the TowsonGlobal International Incubator at Towson University, has landed an exclusive deal with an international manufacturer to bring new security labeling technology to North America.

As small as half an inch wide, the printed security labels—offered through NaturalCheck’s AuthentiCheck division—provide up to twelve levels of protection. No counterfeiter has ever detected and duplicated the imbedded security features. Billions of labels have been successfully added to products in China, India and Europe.

“Manufacturers can choose from the best of biochemistry, precision printing and covert markers to protect their products,” said Larry Bohlen, President of NaturalCheck. “There’s a bit of James Bond in every label.”

Features include invisible serialized codes, covert indicators with decoders for retailers, and inks with extraordinary physical properties. Labels may be used on pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, auto parts, clothing, vitamins and other consumer goods.

AuthentiCheck’s labels join an arsenal of tools used to combat counterfeit products in the American marketplace. More than $200 billion worth of counterfeit goods enter American commerce every year, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Coalition Against Counterfeit Products (CACP). Fake medicines, brake pads, airplane parts and toothpaste doctored with antifreeze threaten the health, safety and confidence of American consumers.

TowsonGlobal, the Business Globalization Center, is Towson University's international incubator for early-stage companies. Its mission is to help early-stage companies—both Maryland companies aspiring to sell products/services abroad, and foreign companies looking to market products/services in the mid-Atlantic region—grow and learn how to compete in the global economy. Member companies receive support through workshops and customized counseling services designed to help them succeed in the global marketplace.
They also have access to low-cost office facilities.

NaturalCheck offer products that “Test today for a healthier tomorrow.” Founded by former NASA engineer Larry Bohlen, the company applies medical and biological technology to food safety and product authenticity.  Its rapid, easy-to-use test kits detect contaminants in food and AuthentiCheck labels protect against counterfeit products. NaturalCheck is part of a growing triple-bottom line segment of the economy dedicated to achieving environmental, social and financial benefits through business.
