TOWSON, Md. (Sept. 13, 2012)—In a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Towson City Center on Wednesday, Sept. 12, the Institute for Well-Being was pronounced open for business by leaders of Towson University and the community.

The Institute for Well-Being is dedicated to promoting and enhancing health and wellness in the community while simultaneously providing unique student education opportunities.

Housed in a 44,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art space in downtown Towson, the institute comprises the Center for Adults with Autism, the Occupational Therapy Center, the Speech, Language and Hearing Center, and the Wellness Center.

Among those in attendance were Towson University President Maravene Loeschke, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz and College of Health Professions Dean Charlotte Exner.

As part of the celebration, John and Terri Hussman of the Hussman Foundation announced a donation of $1.25 million to the Center for Adults with Autism in support of a shared vision to enhance the lives of adults with autism and promote the work of the center.

The gift will enhance educational programs that promote greater access for adults with autism. Such features include a 1,500-square-foot model apartment for learning life skills; instruction for students to assist unemployed and underemployed adults with autism; and programs to teach first responders how to best communicate with adults with autism to more effectively handle emergency situations.

In gratitude to the generosity of the Hussman Foundation, the center has changed its name to the Hussman Center for Adults with Autism.
