TOWSON, Md. (Jan. 2, 2008)—Towson University begins its new Saturday morning science series on Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. in TU's Smith Hall, room 326. The series will feature presentations, performances and demonstrations that are designed for the general public and students of all ages to excite the mind and spark the imagination of young and old and share modern discoveries in mathematics and science.
Former NASA astronaut Donald A. Thomas, Ph.D., director of the Hackerman Academy of Mathematics and Science at Towson University, is presenting and coordinating the program. Thomas retired from NASA in July 2007 and joined Towson University in August 2007. He has flown numerous Shuttle missions including several Columbia and Discovery missions. Thomas has traveled more that 20 million miles completing more than 700 orbits the Earth.
Admission is free and open to the public. Come early for doughnuts, juice and coffee!

THE MOON, MARS, AND BEYOND: NASA’S PLANS FOR HUMAN EXPLORATION
Saturday, Jan. 12, 10 a.m.
Dr. Don Thomas, director of the Hackerman Academy at Towson University and former NASA astronaut, will discuss NASA’s next steps in the exploration of space including return trips to the moon in 2020 and missions to Mars in 2040.
A VISIT BY ALBERT EINSTEIN AND COOL PHYSICS DEMONSTRATIONS
Saturday, Jan. 26, 10 a.m.
Come learn about the life and experiments of one of the greatest scientists of all time, Albert Einstein, in his own words! Well, almost. Marc Spiegel from the Washington, D.C., area will play the part of Einstein and will perform a number of interactive demonstrations on Einstein’s famous theory of relativity. Following this performance, Dr. Vera Smolyaninova, assistant professor of physics at Towson University, will delight the audience with a number of cool physics demonstrations. You never had this much fun learning physics!
In June 2006 Willard Hackerman, president of Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., made a $1 million gift to Towson University to establish the Willard Hackerman Academy of Mathematics and Science. The goals of the academy are to attract more students into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors and to prepare teachers who will be energized to teach in area schools in these much needed discipline areas. Additionally this initiative will provide advanced training in math and science to existing teachers in the state of Maryland.
