Volunteer now for 2008 Special Olympics Maryland at Towson University


TOWSON, Md. (May 13, 2008) --Local sports enthusiasts don't have to wait until August for Olympic action -- and they don't have to travel to Beijing -- because June 6-8 there will be plenty of action and excitement at the 2008 Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) Summer Games at Towson University.

  • Opening Ceremony - Friday, June 6: 7:30 - 9:15 p.m. in the Towson Center
  • Competition: Saturday, June 7: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Sunday, June 8: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. (Bocce - Burdick Fields; Athletics - Johnny Unitas Stadium; Aquatics - Burdick Hall; Softball - Towson Softball Fields)
  • Victory Dance: Saturday, June 7 - 6-9 p.m. - Lot 9, next to University Union
  • Closing Ceremony - Sunday, June 8 - at each individual sports venue; times vary by location

Throughout the weekend, athletes from every county in the state will go for the gold in aquatics, athletics (track and field), bocce and softball. In addition to the thrill of the sports competitions, the SOMD Summer Games also includes all the pageantry of the regular Olympics with a dramatic Opening Ceremony Friday evening featuring the Parade of Athletes, and the lighting of the Special Olympics cauldron; Olympic Park; and official awards presentations at each sports venue.
