TOWSON, Md. (April 6, 2007)--The Towerlight, Towson University's twice-weekly student newspaper, received 16 collegiate journalism awards in two recent competitions, a significant increase over last year's seven awards.
Eight staff members received a total of 11 Mark of Excellence awards from Region 2 of the Society of Professional Journalists--including four first-place awards, compared to one last year. First-place regional winners advance to the national level.
Also, five staff members received five Gold Circle Awards in a national competition sponsored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
Award-winning entries included an in-depth report on mandatory advising, profiles of an Iraq war veteran and a star basketball player, a photograph of Martin O'Malley, a cover illustration for the fifth anniversary of 9/11, an online baseball column, and an apartment guide graphic.
