Washington Monthly rates TU among top 30 percent of U.S. master's universities

Annual ranking reflects schools' 'contribution to the public good

TOWSON, Md. (Sept. 23, 2010)—Towson University occupies position No. 162 in a list of 551 U.S. public and private institutions in Washington Monthly’s 2010 College Rankings issue (Master’s Universities category).

The magazine rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s) and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

When Washington Monthly published its first ranking in 2005 (with the expectation that it would prove a point rather than become a tradition), the idea was to upend the traditional notion of a college guide. Instead of asking what a college could do for you, it asked, “What are colleges doing for the country?” The annual lists have provided some surprising answers.
