TU 'Maps Out' information sharing at Geographic Information Sciences Conference

Featured Speakers include Michael Jones of Google Earth and Congressman John P. Sarbanes

TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 14, 2008)—The Towson University Department of Geography and Environmental Planning and co-sponsors will host the 21st Annual Geographic Information Sciences Conference (TUgis), on Monday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 18, in the University Union located on the campus of Towson University.

TUgis 2008 will emphasize information sharing, or technology transfer, by anyone currently using GIS and anyone considering using GIS. The theme for TUgis 2008 is Democratizing GIS: New Tools for Meeting the Public Demand for Geospatial Information.

The confirmed plenary presenters for TUgis 2008 are Michael Jones, chief technology officer at Google Earth, which provides the unique Google Earthservice and Google Earth Enterprise software for distributed geospatial visualization to users worldwide, and Mark Reichardt, president of Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. Congressman John P. Sarbanes will give the opening remarks.

TUgis 2008 provides GIS and other professionals with the opportunity to share their experiences and receive recognition for their work. The conference features concurrent sessions that include individual presentations, panel presentations, mini-workshops and a poster session.  The winning maps from the Map Design Competition will be displayed in the Maps Exhibition at the Walters Art Museum following the conference.

TUgis 2008 is "going green" and will follow recommendations included in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Guide to Planning and Conducting Environmentally Aware Meetings and Events.

Dr. John (Jay) Morgan III, TU professor of geography and environmental planning, has organized the annual GIS conference since 1988. For more information about TUgis 2008, e-mail jmorgan@towson.edu.
