Towson joins green team

University now a member of Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education

Go Green at TowsonTOWSON, Md. (Feb. 7, 2012)—In an effort to deepen its committment to campus green initiatives, Towson University is now a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, or AASHE.

AASHE enables higher education institutions to meet their sustainability goals by providing specialized resources, professional development and a network of peer support.

Membership covers every individual at an institution, so the entire campus community may take advantage of member benefits.

“Providing the university with the resources and extensive peer support network of AASHE will enable Towson to continue moving forward in making the campus a more sustainable place, with enhanced environmental and sustainability education opportunities,” says Jack Nye, director of sustainability at Towson University.

AASHE hosts the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), which enables institutions to measure their progress and learn from others. With STARS as a roadmap, universities can choose meaningful and appropriate pathways to sustainability while conserving valuable resources, combating global warming and building healthier communities. AASHE also offers online resources for professional development and discussion forums for sharing knowledge.

“We are delighted to have Towson University on board and participating in the campus sustainability community,” says Paul Rowland, executive director of AASHE. “This shows a real commitment to playing a leadership role in some of the biggest challenges of our time, and provides the campus community with access to thousands of examples of best practices in campus sustainability.”

AASHE is one of two supporting organizations for the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, for which 670 presidents and chancellors so far have pledged to lead their institutions to climate neutrality as soon as possible.
