$1 million gift establishes Academy of Mathematics and Science
Donation aims to develop more teachers in science, technology, engineering, math
TOWSON, Md. (June 26, 2006)—Willard Hackerman, president of the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, has made a $1 million gift to Towson University.
The gift will be used to establish the Willard Hackerman Academy of Mathematics and Science, to attract more students into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majors and to prepare teachers who will be energized to teach in area schools in these much needed discipline areas. The initiative will provide advanced training in math and science to existing teachers in the State.
Towson University President Robert L. Caret said, “This generous donation will advance our mission as a Metropolitan University to respond to this critical need. For young students to become engaged in eye-opening scientific and mathematics learning, they need teachers who are excited to be in such a rewarding career. The Hackerman Science and Mathematics Academy will be at the forefront of leadership in this area. ”
“I have spent my entire career witnessing how mathematical and scientific concepts can be translated into the building of beautiful and efficient environments,” Hackerman said, “so it is gratifying to be part of the process of training minds to appreciate the beauty of math and science.
