Towson adopts single-stream recycling, 2,800 recycling bins to be installed on campus
TOWSON, Md. (Sept. 8, 2008)—Towson University has implemented RecyAll, a single-stream recycling program, as part of its Go Green campaign. The program will add 2,800 new recycling bins to campus and enable all standard recyclables—including glass, plastic, aluminum, iron, paper and cardboard—to be placed in any university recycling container.
The new bins have been placed in campus residence halls and will be added to academic buildings, administration buildings and exterior locations throughout the fall term. Installation is scheduled to be complete by 2009. In the interim, all standard recyclables can be placed in any of the current recycling containers on campus.
By eliminating the need to maintain separate recycling bins for different materials, single stream recycling makes the recycling process more efficient and allows for maximum use of available recycling bins. Certain materials such as batteries (which will have a separate recycling collection system), coat hangers and spiral-bound notebooks are not accepted in the single-stream bins. The RecycAll program is the latest in a series of green initiatives Towson University has implemented on campus. Over the summer the university debuted a discount hybrid parking program, purchased electric vehicles for the campus fleet, and installed recycling bins on every floor of campus residence halls.
