Towson hosts 6th annual Baltimore Spelling Bee
Winner to advance to Scripps National Spelling Bee
TOWSON, Md. (March 11, 2011)—Towson University, in partnership with Learn It Systems, will host the 6th Annual Baltimore Spelling Bee in Stephens Hall on March 12 at 8 a.m.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Towson has hosted the event, which offers local students a fun, educational and confidence-building activity in a healthy, competitive environment.
"The Baltimore Bee is an event that serves as a reminder that our city is full of intelligent, talented young people who are sure to become Baltimore’s next great generation,” says Troy Laur, marketing manager for Learn It Systems.
Participating in this year’s Baltimore Bee are 60 students, ranging from grades 3 through 8 and representing public, private and parochial schools in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. All students competing in the regional event are winners of spelling bees hosted by their schools.
Partners Towson University and Learn It Systems will provide the champion of the Baltimore Bee with personal mentoring from Nadia Nasr, an Albert S. Cook librarian, before they advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in June. The winner will also receive the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award Certificate, donated by Jay Sugarman. Other prizes include Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, one-year subscriptions to Encyclopedia Britannica Online and gift certificates to Amazon.com.
