How did you get involved in golf?
“It was an accident, actually. I played other sports in high school and wasn’t really into golf. My mom played for fun, and one day when I was about 11, I was bored and went golfing with her. I’ve been hooked ever since.”
Tell us about growing up in Zimbabwe and how you ended up here. “I lived in Zimbabwe until I was 17, and then moved to the United States with my parents. I went to school at the IMG Academy in Florida, and my golf coach there referred me to Towson.”
What do you like most about playing golf?
"I love how golf tests you mentally at all levels of competition. I also enjoy
the traveling. When I was on the high school team in Zimbabwe, we got to travel
to Japan and parts of Europe for golf tournaments. That was really cool."
What is the biggest accomplishment in your athletic career so far?
"That’s hard to answer. Last year, nobody would have picked Towson to win the
conference championship - but we did. It was an unforgettable experience to be
part of that winning six-man team, including our coach. Also, I'd say it's been
a big accomplishment to play here at Towson. It’s cool to win things, but coming
here has made me who I am today, and I really like where I’ve ended up."
Where does Towson’s golf team practice?
"Since there’s no golf course for us on campus we practice in Phoenix,
about 20 minutes away. I try to practice three to five times a week, but
it’s tough with a full class load. We can practice individually, but we
also have team practices where everyone has to show up, and we work on
specific parts of our game."
It sounds like golf is time-consuming. How do you balance sports and
school work?
"Yes, it is. It can be really hard to balance sports and school work, because I
miss class a lot for games. I’m a senior, and yet I’m still trying to figure out
the best way to keep it balanced. For me, it’s all about dedication, and simply
knowing that I’ve got to get it all done. I try to do work in advance, and end
up spending a lot of hours catching up."
Why did you choose to major in finance?
“I was undecided for a while. I chose finance because it is a broad field. You
aren’t confined to one thing. It gives you the opportunity to branch out into a
lot of different careers. Towson has a good finance program with strong
accreditations.”
What’s the best advice you’ve had related to golf?
“Focus on the process only and the rest will take care of itself.”
Did you have a favorite professor or class here at Towson?
"After taking the introductory finance classes, I took Finance 333, Investments and Equity Security Analysis, with Professor Ted Rugemer. It was a laid-back class, and we learned all about stocks and trading. Basically, we learned how to make money. It got me interested in finance as not just a major, but as a possible career.”
So do you plan on pursuing a career in golf or in finance?
“I definitely want to pursue golf right after I finish school. If that doesn’t work out, then I’ll have finance to fall back on. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed."
