Application Process and Deadlines

To apply for all available aid programs, complete the following steps

1.  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): You must complete a 2013-14 FAFSA to apply for need-based grants, federal loans and work-study funds, many state aid programs, and some private scholarship programs.

·         Apply online every year at the FAFSA website: a) TU’s FAFSA School Code: 002099, and b) If you already filed a 2013-14 FAFSA, but didn’t list TU’s code, return to the FAFSA website and add it.

·         FAFSA Priority Deadline: a) If you haven’t applied yet, apply now, b) some aid programs had a March 1, 2013 deadline, and c) late applicants can still apply for federal loans and Pell Grants, and some private scholarships.

·         The FAFSA requires data from your 2012 federal tax return: a) If you have already filed your 2012 tax returns, the online FAFSA should offer you the option to transfer the required tax data from the IRS to your FAFSA. Please take advantage of this option, and b) if your 2012 tax data is not available yet, you should submit your FAFSA now and include estimated 2012 tax data. Do not wait to submit your FAFSA.

·         Several days after you submit the FAFSA: a) Return to the FAFSA website, b) Confirm that all your data is accurate, c) Confirm that your “Expected Family Contribution (EFC)” is not blank, d) Read all comments and error messages

If you submit your FAFSA with estimated tax data, you must do the following two weeks after you file your taxes: a) Return to the FAFSA web site to update your data, and b) Please use the FAFSA Link to IRS option to automatically update the  required IRS data. 

2.  State of Maryland Aid Programs: Maryland residents can apply for aid programs from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). Some of these aid programs had a March 1 FAFSA deadline. To apply, visit the Maryland Higher Education Commission website.

3.  Other TU Scholarships: To apply for scholarships from other TU departments, visit the Scholarship Seeker website.  Deadlines vary, so apply now.

4.  Private Scholarships: A wide variety of private organizations offer scholarships including businesses, foundations, and civic organizations. To apply, visit the Scholarships website. Deadlines vary, so apply now.

University Admissions Merit Scholarships: University Admissions offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships to incoming full-time students who submitted their fall 2013 admission application, transcripts, and test results by December 1, 2013.
