Step 2: Schedule Placement Testing (if notified)

The information below pertains to students entering fall 2009. Information for students entering spring 2010 will be available during November 2009.

Based on your academic records, you may be required to

take Taking her Placement testsplacement tests which will assess your basic skills

in reading, writing and mathematics. If testing is required, the Placement Testing Office will contact you about scheduling a testing date and which of three sections you need to take: College Board’s ACCUPLACER® online reading comprehension, writing and/or elementary algebra tests. 

New students may not register for placement testing until they have submitted their Enrollment Contract and $300 enrollment fee and received a notification in a bright yellow envelope.

A placement testing notification letter:

  • will be sent only to students who are required to test based on academic information available as of the date the letter is mailed.  You are responsible for submitting any updated academic scores or transfer credits that can qualify you for exemption from placement testing.

  • will include instructions about scheduling an on-campus testing date or testing at a pre-approved, off-campus location

  • will inform you as to the test battery or batteries to be taken (a "needs placement" message will appear on your online student account To-Do List)

  • will be submitted before your TU CARES date, so that you can schedule and complete placement testing before orientation.

The ACCUPLACER® test batteries:

  • assess the basic skills of reading, writing and/or mathematics.

  • are mandatory for some incoming students, based on academic records that have been submitted to Towson University such as:

    • SAT scores (500 or above exempts for each skill)

    • ACT scores (21 or above exempts for each skill
     

            Exemptions can include:

    • transferring a freshman English composition course equivalent to TU’s ENGL 102
    • transferring a college-level mathematics course
    • university acceptance of 30 or more transfer credits
    • college credits earned through AP or IB test scores

  • will determine if refresher course(s) are needed

Placement test results:

  • will appear on the computer screen at the end of the test, and students should receive a hard copy from the test administrator.
  • should bring your ACCUPLACER score report to TU CARES and inform your adviser to include any required placement(s) in your fall semester schedule. 

If minimum scores are not obtained, you will be required to complete one or more refresher course(s). These courses may not count toward the 120 units necessary for graduation. 

Placement requirements must be completed within the first two terms of enrollment at TU.

Please consider taking advantage of the refresher courses that may be available on campus during the summer 2009 sessions. If you would like to complete those requirements prior to fall enrollment, please schedule placement testing as early as possible so that you know your reults in time to register for summer classes.
