The information below pertains to students entering fall 2009. Information for students entering spring 2010 will be available during November 2009.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation, scheduled for Thursday, August 27 through saturday, August 29, is Towson University’s welcome program for all students, whether new or returning. The New Student Orientation program includes orientation weekend, the first week of classes as well as activities of the Labor Day weekend (we call it Labor-Stay).

Mark your calendar now. As a new student, you are expected to participate in all the events of those three days. Optional programming will also take place on Sunday, August 30. There will be plenty of activities to keep you busy throughout the weekend.

All new resident or commuter students are expected to pick up their orientation packet at the University Union on Thursday, August 27. This packet will include a detailed Orientation schedule, a paper copy of your course schedule, and a course catalog. You will need these materials in perparation for several important meetings on Friday and Saturday.

Key events of Orientation Weekend include:

  • Meeting your Orientation Leader (OL). Your OL is an upper-class student who will assist you throughout your first semester at TU.
  • Meeting with your academic adviser to review your fall term schedule of courses and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Attending New Student Convocation, the official beginning of your Towson University academic career.
  • Other events include the Welcome Carnival, New Student Conference, and Casino Night!

Several events are planned during orientation for parents and families. Additional information will be sent to you this summer.

Learn the Tiger Pledge

A Message from our Vice President for Student Affairs

I know that as you receive this very important To-Do List, you find yourself living in two worlds... your current life and the life you are transitioning to at Towson University.  I know what a bittersweet time this must be for you; there is much excitement and joy about what is forthcoming and a bit of sadness regarding what you are leaving behind.

It is my hope that you will embrace the Towson University community, becoming a fully engaged and participating citizen in all aspects of your collegiate experience.  You should expect to meet exceptional faculty members who challenge you and your thinking to new dimensions.  In addition, I ask that you view Towson University as your new home and community, meaning that you take full advantage of the multitude of co-curricular learning opportunities that will be available to you.

At Towson University, we have the Tiger Pledge that articulates standards of behavior and expectations for members of our community.  The Tiger Pledge states:

As a TU student I will...

Take responsibility for myself and the choices I have made.
Imagine success and work hard to achieve my academic goals.
Give my best in showing respect for myself and others.
Engage in my community to make a difference.
Remember to pause to celebrate my accomplishments.

It is not a coincidence the "take responsibility for myself and the choices that I have made" item is listed first.  As you become a fully engaged TU student, the choices you make and the consequences that stem from your decisions will impact your college career.  You, alone, are responsible for your actions and your success at TU.  For example, you have to decide to study or hang out with friends, to complete assignments and homework detailed in a syllabus without a faculty member reminding you, to accept the consequences for behavior that disrupts the community, and to be informed about university policies. Certainly you can count on programs, services, and staff members to assist you in the acceptance of responsibility for your total experience.

Additional information will be available in August about the Tiger Pledge and your responsibilities as a member of our community. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to meeting you in the near future.

Go Tigers!

Deb Moriarty, Ph.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs
