Does Towson have a good dance program?
"When I applied I knew I wanted to study dance. I never thought I’d be the caliber dancer I am today. It’s all because of the training I’ve received here."
Is it all about ballet?
"I do study ballet and perform in traditional dances like The Nutcracker with the Towson Dance Company. But I also study aerial dance at a place called Air Dance Bernasconi. I work as an understudy, mimicking the performers’ moves. It’s reminiscent of Cirque de Soleil. You can suspend yourself in ways you wouldn’t think to."
How did you decide what classes to take? Does anyone help you?
"Your first-year adviser! I met mine, Tracy Miller, at orientation as I was waiting in line for my OneCard. She was amazing from the start. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to graduate on time if I studied abroad. But Tracy made France happen for me. She helped me figure out what courses to take and made sure I earned credit for my independent study there."
What was it like to study abroad?
"I spent half a year in Aix-en-Provence, France, and traveled every weekend. I had never been to a foreign country before and my French was very bad. But before long I was the editor and publisher of the university newspaper, conducting interviews in French. I even put on a dance concert all by myself!"
What’s Baltimore like?
"I love what Baltimore has to offer. I love the restaurants. The Inner Harbor is beautiful. I go to the Lyric Opera House or the Theatre Project, and catch the touring Broadway shows. The campus itself is beautiful. I like that it’s not in the city but close enough."
How do you find time to eat?
"I dance so I’m hungry all the time. When I can’t go to the dining hall and need to get to class, I’ll get an emergency candy bar from the vending machine."
