What's it like to be a commuter student?
“Although the drive is 30 minutes long, I can come home, have peace of mind and get all my academic work done. Even though I commute, I still feel really connected to campus.”
How do you stay connected?
“I have been doing volunteer work since middle school, so I rushed the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. I figured I would join one more organization that puts the community before itself. We raise money for different causes, like cancer research.”
When do you find the time to study?
“If you manage your time well, 24 hours a day is more than enough time to be an overachiever! I find that by keeping myself busy with school, work and a social life that I accomplish a lot more.”
Where do you spend your time between classes?
“When I’m on campus, I hang out in the Union to study, grab a bite to eat or play pool with my friends. I usually see someone I know, so I chat awhile with them. Everyone knows everyone here.”
How do you think you have changed since you started Towson?
“College has helped me transform from a follower to a leader. I have grown and gained leadership qualities since I entered Alpha Phi Omega. I also attended a leadership retreat this past winter called LeaderShape. There are so many programs like this on campus and they are such good experiences.”
Why did you choose to major in elementary education?
“Since I was 15 I knew I wanted to be a teacher. It’s the most direct way to give back to the community. I grew up in the inner city and have always had a passion for less fortunate kids. I want to help them realize that they can be whoever they want to be. That’s part of the reason I joined Choice Tutoring–a student group that tutors inner city children.”
