TUTORS Program
The TUTORS program was developed in response to the No Child Left Behind national initiative. The mission of the program is to help kindergarten through fifth grade students become more proficient and confident in their reading and math skills. Tutors strive not only to make a difference in the children’s lives, but to acquire teaching experience in city schools and opportunities for community service.
The TUTORS program currently partners with Govans Elementary School in the city of Baltimore . Towson University students are assigned to a specific classroom in grades K-5 and work with children under the supervision of the teacher. Tutoring is done either one-to-one, in small groups or with the entire classroom of students.
The program operates for 10 weeks each term, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m . During the summer, the TUTORS program operates for 4 weeks, Monday through Friday.
Towson University provides materials to use while tutoring, as well as training from Towson University professors. Tutors are either volunteers or paid employees ($10 per hour for tutoring and travel time) . All tutors provide their own transprotation.
If you are interested in learning more about the program, e-mail tutors@towson.edu. If you would like to be considered for a tutoring position, complete the TUTORS Program Application form and send it to tutors@towson.edu.
