The mission of the TUTORS program is to help kindergarten through fifth grade students become more proficient and confident in their reading and math skills. Tutors strive not only to make a difference in the children’s lives, but to acquire teaching experience in city schools and opportunities for community service.
The TUTORS program currently partners with Govans Elementary School in Baltimore City. Towson University tutors are assigned to classrooms in grades K-5 and work with children under the supervision of a teacher. Tutors work with the entire classroom, in small groups, or with individual students.
The program operates for 10 weeks each term, Monday through Friday, in two shifts:
M.-Th. from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Fri. from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
During the summer, the TUTORS program operates Monday through Friday for 4 weeks.
Towson University provides training, as well as materials to use while tutoring. Tutors are either volunteers or paid student employees of the university ($10 per hour for tutoring and travel time). All tutors provide their own transportation or utilize the MTA.
