Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience

Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience, a traveling exhibition, examines the life, intellectual development, work and lasting influence of this poet who wrote the iconic words, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” that are engraved on a plaque at the Statue of Liberty. Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience was developed by Nextbook, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture and ideas, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. Exhibit runs through October 14, 2011.

Doug Beube Lecture Exhibiting Artist in The Book: A Contemporary View

Doug Beube is an artist who works in collage, sculpture and photography. He is curator of The Allan Chasanoff Booksworks Collection: The Book Under Pressure and teaches photography at Parsons, The New School in New York City. Beube uses discarded books as his medium, altering their physical structures to expose something that is "new and visually meaningful." Admission is free.
Ringing the Doorbell: Saner, Healthier Sex in College with Speaker Cindy Pierce

In this hilarious keynote, Cindy Pierce uses her social research and anecdotes from the trenches to demystify things like the impact of Internet porn, the role of alcohol in decision-making and the truly elusive nature of female pleasure. The Book: A Contemporary View Exhibition

This exhibition addresses the themes of the book as object, subject and concept. Stretching the definition of book, the show includes artist made books, deconstructed books and book installations. DORA College Program

Research shows that of college students who need help with depression or suicidal ideation, only 11 percent tell a counselor while 67 percent tell a peer. It is important for students to know about these issues and how to respond to students in distress. The Counseling Center and Active Minds present the DORA College Program, a film and discussion about the symptoms of depression and anxiety, how to help someone with these problems and the positive outcomes of seeking help. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. Unfortunately, many college students don’t get the help they need because they don’t know that depression is a common yet treatable illness.
