Plan to attend NSF proposal preparation workshop on March 25

TOWSON, Md. (March 15, 2010) - The Office of Sponsored Programs & Research, a unit of the College of Graduate Studies and Research, will host a workshop on interdisciplinary opportunities available through the National Science Foundation (NSF) on Thursday, March 25.  Featuring Dr. Thomas Baerwald, Senior Science Advisor,  NSF Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, the workshop will focus on both NSF programs and on proposal preparation tips.  The workshop will be held  in 7800 York Road, room 459 (conference room, Department of Computer and Information Sciences) beginning with lunch at noon and continuing until approximately 2 p.m.  Dr. Baerwald will be available during the luncheon to speak individually with workshop participants. 

Dr. Baerwald’s presentation will address the National Science Foundation, its goals and objectives, and the kinds of programs and competitions it conducts in order to support a diverse range of research, education, and related activities that advance fundamental scientific knowledge.  The presentation also will discuss approaches that researchers can use to prepare proposals that will be more competitive in NSF competitions.  Following this presentation, Dr. Baerwald will identify the different types of opportunities provided by NSF in order to support interdisciplinary projects, and address issues that research teams face in their drive to write a strong and compelling proposal for interdisciplinary collaboration.  The tips will be applicable to proposals to a variety of sponsors and programs.

Dr. Baerwald has worked at NSF since 1988, serving as Geography and Spatial Sciences (formerly Geography and Regional Science) Program Director, Acting Director of the Division for Social and Economic Sciences, Interim Director for the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, Coordinator for NSF Global Change Research Activities, and Deputy Assistant Director for the Geosciences.  Prior to his service at NSF, Baerwald established and directed the Geography Department at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul.  He has taught as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota and Macalester College.  Since 1991, he has been co-author of a secondary school world regional geography textbook.
