This Faculty Handbook is updated on a regular basis.

  1. The Adjunct Faculty Committee
    1. Duties of the adjunct faculty committee:
      1. Serves as governing body for adjunct faculty.
      2. Advises chairperson on hiring, retention, and dismissal.
      3. Sets policies for adjunct faculty.
      4. Hears suggestions and recommendations from adjunct faculty.
      5. Evaluates adjunct faculty.
      6. Assigns full-time faculty to evaluate adjunct faculty.

    2. Composition of the adjunct faculty committee:
      1. Assistant Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics serves as chairperson of adjunct faculty committee.
      2. Regular faculty committee members will be appointed by Department of Mathematics chair.
      3. One adjunct faculty member will be appointed by the Assistant Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics.

  2. Hiring, Retention and Dismissal Process
    1. Adjunct faculty committee makes recommendations to Department of Mathematics chair.
    2. Department of Mathematics chairperson makes final decisions.

    4. Protocol for Advancing Status from Adjunct I to Adjunct II
    5. An Adjunct I faculty member (AF I) may submit a letter requesting advancement to Adjunct II status after teaching three years and a minimum of 36 credits* for the Department of Mathematics at Towson University. The letter must include a list of the most recent semesters taught in the Department satisfying the aforementioned time requirement, along with the courses taught (for Department reference).

      At the end of each semester of teaching, all adjunct faculty members are required to submit to the Department the following items for each course taught:

      • Course syllabus
      • Final exam
      • Grade distribution form

      Upon applying for advancement to Adjunct II status, the applicant must check his or her file (stored within the Department) to ensure that the items above are present. Please peruse the

      websites for details with respect to additional items that need to be included in the dossier.

      With respect to the University,FCSM, and Department requirements, submit the Adjunct I dossier, in binder format, to the Chair of the Adjunct Faculty Committee.

      As long as the Departmentís criteria (see above list) and University/FCSM requirements are satisfied (see specific websites), advancement to Adjunct II status will be considered by the Adjunct Faculty Committee. If the committee approves the request, it will be forwarded to the Department Chairperson and then to the Dean of the FCSM. If approved at those levels, the recommendation will be forwarded to the Provost.

      *The minimum time and course requirement named above was mandated by the University Policy and Procedures document as of Spring Semester, 2011.

      Note: The Department of Mathematics follows a procedure ensuring a reasonable, fair, and effective evaluation of all adjunct faculty members. Adjunct faculty members are rehired based upon satisfactory evaluations and Departmental needs. Satisfactory evaluations are determined based on classroom observations (mandatory in the first two semesters of teaching), student course evaluations, and appropriate course administration, determined by the items submitted to the Department as per above. The Adjunct Faculty Committee, which oversees adjunct faculty, believes that any adjunct faculty member who the Department deems worthy of rehiring, who has shown their commitment to the Department through 3 years and 12 courses of service, and who satisfies the Department, College, and University requirements, merits advancement to Adjunct II status.

  3. Expectations of Adjunct Faculty
    1. The faculty member will abide by the Faculty Handbook, a copy of which is available in the Department of Mathematics office, particularly those sections that address faculty rights and responsibilities.
    2. The faculty member shall demonstrate excellence in teaching.
    3. Office Hours
      1. Faculty must hold a minimum of one office hour per week for each course.
      2. Office hours must be scheduled at reasonable times.
      3. Faculty must be present during scheduled office hours.

    4. The faculty member shall be cognizant of and teach in substantial conformance with:
      1. Course descriptions (as they appear in the current University catalog), and
      2. Course outlines and related documents (as promulgated by the Department of Mathematics) that pertain to those courses he/she teaches.

    5. A faculty member shall meet any responsibilities that are specific to the particular position to which the person was appointed.
    6. Students with documented disabilities are entitled to receive approved modifications and appropriate academic adjustments. Students requesting such accommodations must register with the Office of Disability Support Services, and provide professors with a memorandum from the Office of Disability Support Services listing appropriate accommodations.
    7. In the first week of classes, the faculty member will make a course syllabus available to the students for each course taught. The syllabus must include the following:
      1. Name of the course, including the course and section number(s).
      2. Name and title by which the faculty member wishes to be addressed.
      3. Faculty memberís office hours, and on-campus location where these office hours will be held.
      4. Name of text or texts and outside reading required.
      5. Course requirements and grading standards (which cannot be changed by the instructor except under written consent of the entire class).
      6. Course objectives
      7. Statement of policy regarding sufficient advance notice of tests and major assignments.
      8. Attendance policy.
      9. Cheating and plagiarism policy. Note that these must be in accordance with Towson Universityís Student Academic Integrity Policy.
      10. Date of the course final exam as scheduled in the Universityís schedule book.
      11. Campus telephone number and e-mail address.

    8. Faculty attendance policy
      1. Attendance is expected.
      2. Classes must begin and end as scheduled.
      3. Faculty members shall call the Department of Mathematics office (410-704-3091) in cases of emergency.
      4. Absences for observance of religious holidays and jury duty are allowed, but the Department of Mathematics Assistant Chairperson must be notified in advance, and the faculty member must make arrangements for class coverage.
      5. In other cases, the Department of Mathematics Assistant Chairperson has the authority to excuse absences. Permission must be obtained in advance, and the faculty member must make arrangements for class coverage.

    9. Faculty must regularly check their mailbox in the Department of Mathematics (7800 York Road) for messages from students and the Department of Mathematics. Faculty also must regularly check their e mail.
    10. Grades
      1. Final grades must be turned in on time, as defined by the registrarís office, via the PeopleSoft Computer System.
      2. A copy of each studentís exam, quiz, lab, etc. scores and how they were used to compute the studentís final course grade must be submitted to the Department of Mathematics office whenever a faculty member will not be available after the end of the term.
      3. Student grades may not be publicly posted in any format; this includes, but is not limited to, e-mail and telephone communication.
      4. The faculty member is responsible for the supervision of student work necessary to clear up any incomplete grades.
      5. The faculty member should retain each studentís final exam for at least one calendar year.

    11. The faculty member is required to submit the following to the Department of Mathematics:
      1. A copy of the syllabus for each course taught must be turned in within the first week of classes to the Department of Mathematics office.
      2. A copy of the final exam for each course taught and the Grade distribution form must be turned in within one week after the end of the term.
      3. Student evaluations must be collected for each class, following proper protocol as stated in the evaluation documentation.

  4. Department Resources for Adjunct Faculty
    1. Course descriptions and outlines are available from the Department of Mathematics office.
    2. Questions on course content and requests for sample syllabi can be directed to the appropriate course committees.
    3. Questions can be referred to the adjunct faculty committee.
    4. The Department of Mathematics course committees choose textbooks and supporting material.
    5. Instructorís copy of textbooks and supporting materials are available from the Department of Mathematics.
    6. information is available on the Department of Mathematics website.
    7. Access to desk space, a telephone for local calls, a computer and an e-mail account.

  5. Classroom Observations
    1. New adjunct faculty (AF) members will be observed during their first semester of teaching and once during their second year. At the discretion of the Chair of the AF Committee and/or the Chair of the Department, additional visitations may be scheduled for the purpose of providing guidance to the new AF member and/or to provide a data base for future performance evaluations.
    2. AF may be observed at any time. The specific frequency of visits will be determined at the discretion of the Chair of the AF Committee and/or the Chair of the Department and will be based upon peer evaluations, student evaluations, and teaching in conformity with the course outline.
    3. A subset of AF members beyond their second year of teaching for the Department will be randomly observed every semester.
    4. Protocol for observation:
      1. Classroom observations will be documented using the standard
        Department of Mathematics Visitation form.
      2. While classroom observations are usually scheduled with the adjunct faculty member, occasionally the observation may be unannounced.
      3. Adjunct faculty will have the opportunity to respond in writing on the visitation form.

  6. Process for Handling Complaints from Students
    1. Complaints shall be heard by the Assistant Chairperson.
    2. If the Assistant Chairperson deems appropriate, complaints may be presented to the adjunct faculty committee.
    3. Assistant Chairperson and/or adjunct faculty committee shall make a recommendation for action to the Department of Mathematics chair.
    4. Appeals may be made to the Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics.

  7. Campus Resources for adjunct Faculty
    1. The Counseling Center
    2. The Counseling Center supports the primary mission of the University, to develop the intellectual potential of every student. To succeed academically as well as in life, students need a variety of personal and social skills.

      We provide a variety of counseling services to students. The Center is a resource to the university as a whole, providing programs, training, teaching and consultation to students, faculty and staff.

      Students of all kinds visit the Counseling Center. Some are overwhelmed by problems and use our help to persist in school, while others are doing well already and use our services to develop their whole potential.

      We can help students turn difficulties into opportunities for personal growth and improved self confidence. Our services are confidential and there is no fee for most services.

    3. Student Conduct and Civility Education
    4. The primary function of the Office of Student Conduct and Civility Education is to implement the Code of Student Conduct in order to assure standards of acceptable behavior that protects students' health, safety, welfare, and property. In so doing, the Office of Judicial Affairs maintains proper procedures for judicial hearings and for the appeal process.

      Responsibilities of the office staff include interviewing and advising parties involved in disciplinary proceedings; selecting, supervising, training, and advising student judicial aides and the hearing officer; reviewing the decisions of the hearing officer and recommending sanctions to the Vice President for Student Affairs; informally resolving cases not referred to university hearings; maintaining all student disciplinary records; monitoring and suggesting revisions in student conduct policies; assisting in the creation of community service sanctions designed to promote student moral development; facilitating student appeals; and serving as a resource to faculty and staff regarding student misbehavior.

    5. Disability Support Services
    6. Towson University is committed to providing equal access to its programs and services for students with disabilities, in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The University does not have a specially designed program for students with disabilities, but instead offers an array of accommodations and services for students with disabilities who are registered with Disability Support Services.

      Disability Support Services is the office designated to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities. Students seeking accommodations must identify themselves to DSS, request an appointment to discuss their needs, and provide DSS with up-to-date and complete documentation of their disabilities. DSS determines what accommodations are reasonable on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the studentís disabilities and needs, nature of their learning task, course standards and essential requirements of the program of study, and educational environment. Students are encouraged to register with DSS as soon as possible after admission to the University to ensure timely provision of services.
