Problem of the Week

Starting in the Fall'2009 semester, the Department of Mathematics and the TU Mathematics Club will sponsor an ongoing problem-solving competition. This activity is designed to promote interest in mathematics beyond regular coursework and to help the participants develop their problem solving skills. The rules of the competition are as follows:

  • The competition is open to all undergraduate students enrolled in coursework at TU.
  • Students earn points by submitting solutions to the posted problems. The earned points accumulate over the course of the semester.
  • New problems will appear once a week and stay active for four weeks. The current problems will be posted at this website and at several locations around the Department of Mathematics and the hallways of 7800 York Road.
  • After a problem has been retired, all the submitted solutions to that problem will be graded on a scale from 0 to 10.
  • The solutions should be submitted to Dr. Angel Kumchev via e-mail (akumchev@towson.edu) or in hardcopy. Hardcopy submissions may be delivered to the Math Office (YR 316) or to Dr. Kumchev's office (YR 323). The submitted solutions should adhere to the following guidelines:
    • They should be written clearly and show all of your work.
    • Multiple sheets should be secured together.
    • The first page must show your name, e-mail address, and the date and time of the submission.
    • Solutions to different problems should be submitted separately.
  • If a student submits multiple solutions to the same problem, only the most recent one will be graded. Thus, it is very important to date submissions.
