Dr. Abbott specializes in rhetorical theory and criticism, public argumentation, political rhetoric, and cultural communication, particularly as they relate to questions of citizenship in moments of crisis. His research focuses on the ways that rhetorical choices and public arguments in the aftermath of the economic crisis in 2008 have informed a shift in our understanding and performance of citizenship in traditional as well as more unconventional senses. He teaches courses in argumentation and rhetorical theory and criticism.
