A Message from the Chair
Greetings MCCS Alumni and Friends,
As I complete my first full year as chair of the Mass Communication and Communication Studies Department I can honestly say how thrilled and proud I am to be a member of this department. Throughout the year I've had the pleasure to meet many of you and to attend numerous TU and College of Fine Arts and Communication events that highlighted our many departmental accomplishments.
Our faculty continue to be leaders in their fields, producing an impressive array of published books and peer-reviewed research on a variety of topics including political communication, international advertising, health communications and journalistic ethics. And our students continue to make us proud as they are selected to present their research at regional and national research conferences.
While I truly believe that the instruction provided by our faculty is top-notch, I also know that some of the most exciting opportunities we can offer our students are outside the classroom. This past year we've had several successes as our students have been selected for national honors. Olivia Obineme and Kenneth Stukes were among forty students selected nationwide to attend the International Radio and Television Society Multicultural Career Workshop in New York City last November, and more recently Jeremy Bauer-Wolf was selected to work in the Online News Association's student newsroom during the Sept. 22-24 convention in Boston. Bauer-Wolf was one of only 20 students selected from 143 applicants. In addition, leaders of our student groups have attended regional and national conferences of the American Advertising Federation, the Public Relations Student Society of America, and the Society of Professional Journalists.
We are so proud of our student honors yet also recognize that opportunities like these are expensive, and we simply don't have a regular funding source to support these. So this is specifically where I'm appealing to you to help us provide more of these opportunities to students by designating your donation to our general department fund. Your donation will be used to help our student organizations and to assist those selected for participation in national programs. I promise you that it will be a worthy investment in the success of our students and that you will be making a difference in a student's future.
Thank you to all who have welcomed me to TU and to the MCCS department and I look forward to meeting many more of you at future events.
