Vision of the Board Advisors

The Department of Mass Communication and Communications Studies at Towson University will be the leader in the Mid-Atlantic region by providing communication excellence in visual, verbal, and written competencies for the 21st century.
We will:
  • Provide students broad and diverse course work in advertising, electronic media, journalism, film, public relations, and communication studies.
  • Offer high-quality educational programs which enable students to become critical thinkers and effective, ethical communicators.
  • Use practical, innovative experiences and partnerships to prepare students for successful communication careers.
  • Maintain and enhance strong relationships with alumni and community leaders from business, government, and the non-profit sector.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Board of Visitors is to build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships between the TU Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies and its many publics. It supports the educational work of the students and faculty in the program.  The Board is advisory to the Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies in helping them fulfill the mission of the university and interface with the community at large.
Projects and ideas generated by the department will be presented to the Board before implemetnation.  Monies raised through the actions of the Board will be treated as dedicated or unrestricted funds, based on donor specifications. The chair, with advice from the department's Executive Committee and the College's dean, will allocate unrestricted funds to meet departmental needs.

Board Membership

Board members are appointed by the chair of the Department and the chair of the Board of Visitors. Each member of the Board is invited to make an annual financial contribution to the program, the amount determined by each Board member, but not less than $250 annually. A timetable for these requests will be established and announced.
It is expected that Board members will be active in the pursuit of its purpose, and that they will attend meetings, serve on committees, and cultivate contacts between the department and prospective parties interested in the department.
The term of office for Board members is three years with an opportunity to be re-appointed to a second consecutive three year term.
Also serving as ex-officio members on the Board of Visitors are the College's dean, the department's chair, a representative from the College of Gradutate and Extended Education, a representative from Institutional Advancement, a faculty member from the department, and a student from the department.

Board Structure

The full Board meets twice a year.  Committees of the Board meet as needs arise.
The officers of the Board consist of a chairperson, vice-chairperson, and committee chairs. The vice-chairperson is elected by the full Board to serve a term of two years. To be eligible for serving as vice-chairperson, a candidate must have served on the Board for one year. The vice-chairperson automatically assumes the role of chairperson.  The term of office fro chairperson is two years. The immediate past Board chairperson shall remain on the Board for two additional years.
The duties of the chairperson are to conduct the meetings of the Board, appoint committee members in consultation with the department chairperson, monitor the work of the committees, and be the primary contact person with the department chairperson. The duties of the vice-chairperson are to assist the chairperson as needed and seek new Board members in consultation with the Board chairperson and the department chairperson.

Mission Satement

Towson University's Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies is focused on developing professional graduates who can perform with distinction in conveying information and expressing ideas effectively in contemporary media.  The Department is committed to preparing capable women and men for responsible positions which require that they think creatively and critically, solve problems and cope with change in an era of global competitiveness and technological advancement.

The purpose of the Board of Advisers to the Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies is to be an advocate of the Department in its pursuit of excellence and to advance the Department's profile as a regional resource.

The Board will undertake this mission by assisting the various programs and projects of the Department.  This assistance will include such things as:

  • Securing internships for the program.
  • Mentoring program participants in achieving career placement.
  • Providing guest speakers for classes.
  • Helping locate well qualified adjunct faculty.
  • Sponsoring a Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • Campaigning in support of capital expenditure and staffing goals.

Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award Planning Committee
This committee recommends nominees for this award and presents their recommendations to the full Board for approval. They locate underwriting for this annual event, identify guests for cultivation, work with the University in planning details for the event, and encourage an ongoing relationship between the Board and/or the department and the recipients of the award. This is a friend raising committee whose goal it is to raise the profile of the department.
Partnerships Committee
Working with the University's Development office, this committee identifies, invites, and encourages the development of gifts to the department and partnerships between the department and business, government, and the non-profit sector. Relationships are to be developed between the department and potential outside funding agencies in order to meet technological, scholarship, and other need of the department's programs. This is fund-raising committee whose goal is to open doors for the department.
Teaching and Technology Committee
This committee reviews the department's programs and pedagogy in order to help foster high quality, practical, and innovative educational experiences for the students. Also, they review the department's technology infrastructure as it relates to the curriculum. This is an advisory committee to the faculty of the department.
Friends of Mass Communication and Communication Studies
A Friend of Mass Communication and Communication Studies is anyone recognized by the Board who either makes a contribution to the department of $1,000 or more and/or provides considerable volunteer time in helping the department achieve its goals. Friends of the program will recognized by the Board in appropriate ways.
