Maryland Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists College Scholarship

Guidelines:
  1. Residency -- Applicants must have regular home residence in the State of Maryland, but may attend colleges or universities outside Maryland in nearby Virginia, D.C. or Pennsylvania.
  2. Education Level -- Applicants may be full- or part-time students in undergraduate level working for a bachelor's degree with an emphasis or major in journalism.
  3. Age -- No restriction -- scholarship is open to adults beyond regular college age attending night school to earn an undergraduate degree.
  4. Scholastic ability -- High scholastic ability will be considered with other factors.
  5. Family Income -- Will be considered as well as the extent to which the student is funded by other scholarships.
  6. Journalism Societies, Clubs, etc. -- Membership in local campus chapters or journalism clubs, societies or radio/TV groups should be listed.
Application:
Written application should include:
  • Transcripts of grades for at least the two previous semesters in college;
  • Listing of journalism activities; submit articles, tapes, videos, etc.;
  • Awards or honors received;
  • Listing of special interests, hobbies, skills, etc.;
  • Names of current colleges; others attended;
  • Brief essay on future plans for a journalism career;
  • Statement of family income and financial need -- preferably signed by parents or college adviser;
  • Letters of recommendation from journalism/mass communication schools, department advisers, mass media professors, etc.
