Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies
Pre-Mass Communication and Admission to the Major
Students interested in becoming undergraduate
Mass Communication majors must first become
Pre-Mass Communication majors (PMCO) and
enroll in three required screening courses:
ENGL 102 Writing for a Liberal Education (3)
COMM 131 Fundamentals of Speech Communication (3)
MCOM 101 Introduction to Mass Communication (3)
Students cannot apply for MCOM as a major until
they have completed these courses.
Note: This requirement applies to incoming
freshmen, transfer students, currently enrolled
Towson University students and students working
on a second bachelor’s degree.
Applying to the Major
Admission to the MCOM major is highly competitive.
To meet eligibility requirements, students must:
Complete at least 30 units at Towson University or elsewhere.
Complete ENGL 102, COMM 131 and MCOM 101 with a combined minimum GPA of B (3.00). No more than one of these screening courses may be repeated for the purpose of determining eligibility.
Achieve an overall GPA of all TU courses of a B (3.00) or above.
Students should declare MCOM
as their major by completing an online application. The application should be completed during finals week before the semester deadlines: May 20 for notification by June 30, Aug. 15 for notification by Aug. 31 and Dec. 20 for notification by Jan. 30. The Department will wait until all grades are in before processing applications. Students will be notified by email to their Towson email address of their acceptance or denial.
Students who are
denied may re-apply. Appeals may be addressed to
the department’s Executive Committee. All appeals
should be in the form of a letter accompanied by
a transcript.
