Tenor Tony Boutté enjoys a growing career as a performer of music from the Baroque to the present, performing with many leading ensembles in this country and abroad. In the recent past, Mr. Boutté performed with three important European conductors: William Christie of Les Arts Florissants; Christophe Rousset of Les Talens Lyriques; and Hervé Niquet of Concert Spirituel. He has sung with many of North America’s premiere ensembles, including New York Collegium, Tafelmusik, Opera Lafayette, Washington Bach Consort, Boston Baroque, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra, Violins du Roy and the Portland Baroque Orchestra, with whom he sang Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 under the direction of Ton Koopman. He has also performed at the Salzburg Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Santa Fe Opera, Bard Festival, Skylight Opera Theater, Schleswig-Holstein Festival and Tage Alte Muzik Regensberg.
This accomplished artist made his opera debut as Orfeo in Monteverdi’s opera with Skylight Opera Theater. Of that critically acclaimed performance, Opera News wrote “Tony Boutté set a standard that was unmatched by his peers.” Tony has gone on to perform many lead roles, including Ottavio in Don Giovanni conducted by Stuart Bedford (Aldeburgh Festival), Britten’s Albert Herring (Milwaukee), Handel’s Acis and Galatea (New York) and Rameau’s Pygmalion (Mexico).
In recent years, Mr. Boutté has performed in more than six world premieres, including: Michael Gordon’s Chaos at The Kitchen (New York City), Betsy Jolas’ Motet III with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants (Paris), Carbon Copy Building by the Gordon/Wolfe/Lang team of Bang On A Can (Settembre Festival/Turin), and David Soldier’s Naked Revolution (Minneapolis). He also performed in the New York premier of In the Penal Colony by Philip Glass. In one his most memorable performances, Tony traveled to Austria to sing the role of Gandhi in Philip Glass’ Satyagraha. Tony has recorded Bach’s St. John Passion with Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra, Carbon Copy Building with Bang on a Can, and he has sung in documentaries for the BBC and PBS. He can also be heard on a new recording of music from the Jane Austen Songbook, recorded with Julianne Baird and Laura Heimes, soprano and Karen Flint, fortepiano. Other upcoming opera recordings include Sacchini’s Oedipe à Colonne with Opera Lafayette on NAXOS and the title role in Handel’s Acis and Galatea with Musica Angelica baroque on the Chandos label. In October Tony will travel to Liverpool, England to reprise his role in Carbon Copy Building with Bang On A Can, a production which coincides with the release of the original cast recording of the opera on Cantaloupe Records. In December, Tony will make his Carnegie Hall debut in performances of Handel’s Messiah with the Masterwork Chorus.
