Dr. Magaldi is the author of Music in Imperial Rio de Janeiro: European Culture in a Tropical Milieu (Scarecrow Press, 2004). On 2005, her book received the Robert Stevenson award granted by the American Musicological Society for the best publication on an Iberian topic. Dr. Magaldi's articles have appeared in journals such as Latin American Music Review, Inter-American Music Review, Revista de Musicologia, and Popular Music. She has chapters included in publications such as Brazil in the Making: Reflections on National Identity (Rowan and Littlefield, 2006), and The Universe of Music: Latin America and Caribbean (University of Texas Press, forthcoming). Dr. Magaldi has articles in The New Grove Music Dictionary of Women Composers (1994), The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2001), and the revised edition of the Musikalische Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, forthcoming). She is a contributing editor for the music section of the Handbook of Latin American Studies (Library of Congress) and associate editor for Women and Music in America Since 1900: An Encyclopedia (Greenwood, 2001). She has presented papers in national and international conferences: in the fall of 2004 she presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society (AMS) in Seattle; in the winter of 2005 she presented at annual meeting of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, US branch, in Nashville, TN. Cristina Magaldi joined the music faculty at Towson University in the fall of 1998. She holds degrees from the University of Brasilia, Brazil (B.S.), Reading University, England (M.Mus.), and the University of California, Los Angeles (Ph.D.). She specializes in Latin American Music, music of the Americas, and popular music. Dr. Magaldi is a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation and a research associate of the Latin American Center at the University of California, Los Angeles.
