Sherrie
Norwitz joined the Towson University faculty as professor of viola in
1989. She has earned degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music of
the Johns Hopkins University and the State University of New York at
Stony Brook where she held a graduate assistantship. She completed her
Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Maryland College Park
where she was awarded a t graduate fellowship in chamber music studies
with the Guarneri String Quartet. Her viola studies have been with
Karen Tuttle, John Graham, Miles Hoffman, and Michael Tree.
Norwitz’ chamber music and orchestral festival studies include the
Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival directed by Leslie Parnas, the
Norfolk Chamber Music Festival with the Tokyo String Quartet, the New
York String Orchestra Seminar directed by Alexander Schneider, the Taos
School of Music with the American String Quartet, the Cleveland Chamber
Music Seminar with the Guarneri String Quartet, the Scotia Festival of
Music with Walter Trampler, and the Aspen Music Festival where she was
a fellowship recipient for several years and performed as Assistant
Principal Violist in the Aspen Festival Chamber Symphony. She has also
toured Scandinavia and performed at the Newport Festival as a member of
the New American Chamber Orchestra.
Norwitz performed as a member of the Baltimore Opera Orchestra for
twenty-two years and served as principal violist of the Annapolis
Symphony Orchestra for nine. She has been a regular free-lance artist
in the Baltimore-Washington area, performed with the contemporary
chamber music ensemble Res Musicamerica, and has appeared as concerto
soloist and in recital throughout Maryland. She performs regularly with
faculty chamber ensembles at Towson University, is a clinician at the
TU String Day and All State Workshops, and also serves part-time as an
Instrumental String Music Specialist with the Baltimore City Public
Schools.
