The Department of Music at Towson University has had a rich tradition of choral excellence. Ensembles have performed in Meyerhoff Symphony Hall with the Baltimore Chorale Arts Society and Orchestra, as well as with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The Chorale has performed for the Maryland Music Educators Association, and annual tours have taken the ensemble to England, Scotland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and California. In addition, graduates and present members of the TU choral ensembles achieve success as choral conductors and music educators both locally and throughout Maryland.
The choirs are comprised primarily of undergraduate students from every discipline and walk of life, and focus on a broad spectrum of literature ranging from 16th – 21st century music in the western European tradition, jazz to opera, Motown to world music.
The Music for the Stage ensemble is a training ground for undergraduate and graduate majors in vocal performance, music education, and general music studies as well as students majoring in Theatre or Dance. Students experience a wide variety of vocal music intended for stage performance including opera, musicals, art songs, cabaret, and other genres of vocal music through introductory and advanced courses. Music for the Stage produces fully-staged operas and musicals (often with orchestra) as well as workshop performances of opera and musical theatre scenes. The ensemble also includes a resident children’s opera company called Opera in a Can.
