Preparing for Your Recital

PREPARING FOR YOUR RECITAL

SCHEDULING RECITALS IN THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS:
All on campus recitals will be held in the recital hall unless your applied teacher determines that the Kaplan Hall is needed because of equipment needs (for example – two pianos are needed), stage size, etc.

SCHEDULING RECITALS OFF CAMPUS:
If you would like to have your recital off-campus, please obtain the “Request for Off Campus Student Recital” form.  That form must be approved by your applied teacher and at least one other faculty member who will be in attendance.  Please adhere to deadlines as listed on the form (they vary from semester to semester).  If you are giving an off-campus recital, you will NOT be allowed to register for your recital until you have selected a date.  Your recital authorization form must be turned in with the Request for Off-Campus Recital.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES & REMINDERS:
1.         You must use the template posted on the department’s website (http://wwwnew.towson.edu/music/student_recital_templates.htm) when preparing your program.  It is important that you prepare your program according to the guidelines and deadlines listed below.  Should you be unable to meet the deadlines listed below, the department reserves the right to cancel your recital.

            4 weeks prior to recital
Submit first camera-ready draft of program to applied teacher

            3 weeks prior to recital:
Receive revised/edited draft from applied teacher

2 weeks prior to recital:
Submit final camera-ready program to Diana Miller or her designee (in CA3095) for printing.  The program you submit MUST have a note from your applied teacher indicating that it has been approved.    Dr. Anthony will NOT review your program if it has NOT been approved by your teacher.  It is then your responsibility to return to the music office (CA3095) within three business days after you submit your program to see if any changes need to be made.

2.         If you wish to have your recital recorded, complete the “Technical Request Form (Student)”(http://wwwnew.towson.edu/music/tech_student.htm ).  Requests and payments must be made at least two weeks prior to your recital.  Submission of a request does not guarantee that a technician will be available, but every attempt will be made to provide one.  Payment for recording fees may be by check (payable to “Towson University”) or by cash, submitted to John Spivey.  If you have questions, contact John Spivey at 410-704-4633 or at jspivey@towson.edu.

3.         If you wish to request a stage manager for your recital, please complete the “Stage Manager Request Form” found on the department’s website (http://wwwnew.towson.edu/music (then click “Information for Current Students,” and “Stage Manager Request Form”).  The cost is $25.00.  Stage Managers are subject to availability.  The sooner the request is made, the better the chance of our being able to supply one.

4.         SCHEDULING A DRESS REHEARSAL -- Once the semester begins, please remember to schedule your dress rehearsal time (two hours maximum) through my office.  Because of ongoing equipment installation in both halls, REHEARSALS CAN ONLY BE SCHEDULED AFTER 3:00 P.M. ON WEEKDAYS.  Weekends are a bit more flexible – but the times are in demand so you may need to schedule a rehearsal in the morning or late in the evening.  Don’t put this off to the last minute and don’t expect to get a time at the last minute.  You MUST confer with your applied teacher and your accompanist (if applicable) as to their availability.  Email several possible dates and times to me (mcriss@towson.edu).  I will then inform you as to hall availability based on your request.  It is your applied teacher’s responsibility to sign out a key for your rehearsal (through Diana Miller’s office).  Keys to the recital hall and the Kaplan Hall will NOT be signed out to students.

5.         Arrange for a page turner, if necessary.

6.         Receptions can be approved under certain circumstances and a $100.00 deposit is required.  Reception reservation forms are available in the main music office (CA 3095) and on the music department website.  Reception requests will be accepted once the semester begins.  Don’t wait until the last minute to reserve a room.  A request does NOT guarantee that a room will be available.  THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS’ LOBBIES ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR RECEPTIONS.

7.         Begin preparing any publicity materials you may wish to display.  Two weeks before your recital is the best time to post flyers in APPROVED locations.  Please comply with building policies regarding such flyers.  DO NOT post on painted surfaces, walls, windows, fire doors, or classroom doors.  Faculty bulletin boards may be used with their permission.  Bulletin boards not otherwise restricted may be used.  DO NOT POST ON BULLETIN BOARD USED FOR OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS.  Flyers posted in unauthorized locations will be removed without notice.

If you have any questions regarding the above, please contact me at mcriss@towson.edu.

Best of luck as you prepare for your event.  – Mary Ann Criss
