Clarinet Proficiency Levels

Music Education Majors

Freshman Level Proficiency

Range: up to highest G 
Long Tones on all notes from lowest E to highest G
major and minor scales and arpeggios to 4 sharps and flats
three-octave chromatic scale
etudes: examples- Baermann, Daily Studies, Op. 63; Rose, 32 Etudes, 40 Etudes; Kell, Staccato Studies
solos: examples- Debussy, Petite pièce; Jacob, Five Pieces for Solo Clarinet; Krommer, Concerto in Eb; Mercadante, Concerto; Bernstein, Sonata

Sophomore Level Proficiency

Range: up to highest Ab
all major and minor scales and arpeggios and chromatic scale, slurred and articulated
etudes: examples- Victor Polatschek, Advanced Studies for the Clarinet; Rose, 40 Etudes Book I 
solos: examples: Schumann, Fantasy Pieces; Hindemith, Sonata; Osbourne, Rhapsody; Brahms, Sonata No. 1

Upper Division Audition
jury must include a representation of the sophomore list, or equivalency, and must be performed at an acceptable level of proficiency

Junior Level Proficiency

Range: up to highest A
scales: Baermann, Method No. 3 or Hite, Foundation Studies
etudes: examples- Cavallini, Thirty Caprices; Rose, Twenty Grand Studies from Rode
solos: examples- Burgmüller, Duo; Crusell, Concertos 1-3; Messiaen, Abyss of the Birds (from the Quartet for the End of Time); Milhaud, Sonatine; Spohr, Concerto No. 1; Stravinsky, Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet
this is the minimum level of proficiency acceptable for a graduation recital

Senior Level Proficiency

scales: continue Baermann, Method No. 3 or Hite, Foundation Studies
etudes: examples- Jeanjean, 16 Etudes Modernes
solos: examples: Berg, Vier Stücke; Debussy, Première rhapsodie; Françaix, Concerto; Milhaud, Duo Concertant; Rozsa, Sonatina; Spohr, Concertos Nos. 2, 3, or 4; Sutermeister, Capriccio; Weber, Concerto No. 1; Mozart, Concerto; Poulenc, Sonata
Selected Orchestral repertoire from Orchestral Excerpts for the Clarinet, Vols. 1 and 2 (International)
senior recital containing at least one major work, which must reflect musical and technical maturity at a level commensurate with the music performed

Performance Majors
