Special cybersecurity event brings FBI and NSA experts to TU Oct. 31

Experts from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National Security Agency (NSA) will take part in a special cybersecurity event in the West Village Commons Ballroom Monday, Oct. 31 from 12:30-4:30 p.m.

The event will feature presentations from three regional cyber security experts:

• 12:45 and 2:35 p.m. - James Crumpler ‘16 will perform live computer security demonstrations, including an attack/defend and a Linux exploitation. He will also present techniques for mitigating cyber attacks across multiple platforms. Crumpler is a cleared, NSA-employed cyber professional with a focus on embedded systems, exploitation and software engineering.
• 1:30-2:30 p.m. - FBI Supervisory Special Agent Daniel Gray will present "The Cyber Insider Threat: recognizing and combating cyber crime." Gray is responsible for the management and coordination of FBI cyber investigations for all of Maryland and Delaware. He previously served as the assistant section chief of the FBI Cyber Division’s former Cyber National Security Section and as the deputy director of the Presidentially mandated National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force. Gray served three years as the FBI’s sole liaison to the CIA’s Information Operations Center, coordinating efforts between the FBI and CIA for overseas and domestic information and technical operations. 
• 3-4 p.m. - TU professor Dr. Michael O’Leary will present a live hack by TU computer science students and share his presentation, "Defending Your Network: a survey of common cyber threats." Michael is the founding director of Towson University’s School of Emerging Technologies (SET). He developed and teaches hands-on capstone courses in computer security for both undergraduate and graduate students, and has coached TU’s Cyber Defense team to the finals of the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

In addition to the presentations, OTS professionals will offer one-on-one tech advice to attendees throughout the event. Guests can enter to win giveaways, including Ravens tickets and TU merchandise. Refreshments will be served.

The event is free and open to the public.

TU’s Office of Information Security in the Office of Technology Services (OTS) is hosting this event as the culmination of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
