The Newell Dining Hall and Glen bridge will be closed for the fall semester and the Cook Library Starbucks will be closed until October as renovations are made to improve and expand services. Below, get the details on each project and the accommodations available to help you stay well-fed, well-caffeinated and on-time during the closure.

Newell Dining

The Newell Dining facility, including both the Den and the upstairs dining hall, will be closed until January 2017 for renovations that include a new roof and windows and updated dining rooms and bathrooms. When the building reopens, the upstairs dining hall will have a full-service bakery, a retail deli serving premium-quality meats with late-night hours, and expanded action stations serving additional made-to-order food options. The Den will be updated with a new made-to-order salad and soup area.

Accommodations

During the renovation, free continental breakfasts will be available every weekday in Newell, Richmond, Prettyman and Scarborough Halls, enabling building residents to grab a coffee, fruit and pastry before heading to class.

Au Bon Pain will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays during the fall semester, with an additional register and espresso station to better accommodate students living on the York Road side of campus. The LA Café will also have expanded hours, serving breakfast, upscale sandwiches, soups, baked goods, sushi and Starbucks coffee from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. For faster service, students are encouraged to download and use the Tapingo app for food orders at Au Bon Pain.

Local food trucks will have occasional stops on the York Road side of campus during the fall semester to offer another dining option to students in the area.

Glen Bridge

Glen bridge

The Glen bridge is being replaced after an annual inspection resulted in recommended maintenance. Considering the cost of maintenance and the age of the existing bridge, replacing the bridge entirely was the most efficient long-term solution. The existing bridge will not available for use during the fall semester. It will be deconstructed in October and replaced with a new, wider bridge that will accommodate more pedestrian traffic. The bridge will have a similar look to the one between the Union Garage and patio. It will be custom-fabricated off-campus this fall and erected in the winter, opening for the spring semester.

Accommodations

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to use the stairwell adjacent to Tower A or Cross Campus Drive to travel to and from the Glen complex during the fall semester. Signs are posted directing travelers along recommended pathways.

Starbucks

The Starbucks in Cook Library will double in size when it reopens this October serving a full food menu, including hot breakfast sandwiches and wraps. The expanded café will feature late-night hours, more seating for customers and an additional register to reduce wait times.

Accommodations

Au Bon Pain will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays during the fall semester with an additional espresso machine serving coffee and specialty drinks. The Paws Café on the bottom floor of the University Union also serves Starbucks coffee and espresso drinks from 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 11 p.m. on weekends.

“We appreciate the campus community’s patience as we update and expand our facilities,” said Vice President for Administration and Finance Joe Oster. “These extensive renovations cannot be completed in just one summer break. I hope the closures will be an opportunity for students, faculty and staff who usually dine in Newell or Starbucks to experience some of our 15 other quality dining options, including the LA Café, Au Bon Pain, Enactus Café (in Stephens Hall), 7720 Café, Glen Dining, and the facilities in the Union and West Village Commons.”
