TU's Kendyl Scott taking softball world by a storm

Junior outfielder played for Great Britain in the World Softball Championships

In 2020, softball will make its return to the summer Olympic Games. Until then, the biggest tournament in softball happens every two years with the WBSC Women’s World Softball Championships.

This year, one of our own Towson Tigers competed on the biggest stage in international softball, as junior outfielder Kendyl Scott was selected to the Great Britain team for the event, held in Surrey, Canada.

Although Scott was born and raised in Southern California, she has dual citizenship because her father Peter grew up in Harlow, England, 30 miles north of London. It was her father who suggested that Scott try out for the Great Britain team.

"He contacted one of the directors of the team in the U.K., and we sent statistics and video," Scott told Pressbox.com. "I flew to England in December to meet with the team's director, who told me that I was being looked at. They were able to catch some of Towson's games on the video live stream, and then I got the call that I had made the team."

Scott and Great Britain finished 13th out of 30 teams in a tournament won by the USA. But she told Pressbox that although the result wasn’t perfect, her experience in Surrey was indescribable.

“The feeling that you get when you pull on the uniform that says 'Great Britain' on the front was so memorable for me,” Scott recalled emotionally. “But what I'll remember most is how everyone respected the game."

During her sophomore season at TU last spring, the Tigers finished with a 37-20 record and lost in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game. Scott, who earned All-CAA Tournament honors, finished the season with a .300 batting average, six home runs, 25 RBIs, 37 runs scored and 18 stolen bases.
