Alumni representing Towson University’s National Pan-Hellenic Council’s (NPHC), nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities, are celebrating a fundraising milestone in their campaign to build a physical tribute on campus.

The NPHC is now more than halfway to a goal of $75,000, thanks to sizable gifts from NPHC members.

Members of the TU’s NPHC fraternities and sororities gathered on January 31 with President Kim Schatzel before a men’s basketball game at SECU Arena. It was there they celebrated a pledge of over $11,000 from members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, presented by Paul-Sean Gray, who is also a board member of the Towson University Foundation.

“TU has prioritized inclusion as part of our strategic plan. And here, inclusion can mean simply finding a place of belonging or a passion within our community,” President Schatzel told those gathered. “A project like this tribute or your organization can bring us together, as can a basketball game, a leadership program, a research project or the recognition of a longtime faculty member or mentor. There’s a space to both find your passion and support student success at TU.”

TU plans to install a walkway tribute to the nine members of the NPHC adjacent to the Dean Chapman Quadrangle, which was officially dedicated in October. The walkway will be lined with nine brick pillars, each recognizing a fraternity or sorority.

Chapman Quad serves as a community focal point to celebrate the strength of our shared cultures. Construction on this project could begin as early as summer 2022 with the successful achievement of the fundraising goal.

The nine NPHC organizations align with the beliefs of Dr. Julius Chapman, TU’s first dean of minority affairs, who was responsible for bringing TU’s historically Black Greek organizations to campus. The nine organizations include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta.

“TU is honored to partner with our alumni to pay tribute to the important work of the fraternities and sororities of the NPHC,” says Todd Langenberg, associate vice president of development at Towson University.  “These proud organizations have served our students for decades, giving them a place of sisterhood, brotherhood, and belonging.

“TU looks to this physical space on the Dean Chapman Quad as a symbol for current and future generations of students to reflect, feel inspired, and empowered to engage in the best of what it means to be a Towson Tiger and a member of one of the Divine Nine.”
