Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security Management (IHSM)

Towson University offers a fully online Master of Science degree in Integrated Homeland Security Management and the embedded graduate certificate in Security Assessment and Management. These two options form an interdisciplinary program to provide an applied graduate education for personnel working in various areas of homeland security, risk protection and management, emergency response, and crisis communications. The intent is to provide students with advanced studies and experience to extend their expertise in one area while reaching out to work with other areas in an integrated response.

The core courses provide a common base for all students in the program to familiarize them with the overall issues and concerns of homeland security. The students do additional work in their own areas of expertise in the specialized courses, but reach across to other areas by taking introductory graduate level courses in two other areas. The project is a key part of the program, providing hands-on experience in dealing with real-world problems of homeland security. The project work begins early in the program and continues to provide a sense of reality as the student moves through the program. Ideally, students will work together in joint projects, sharing skills and gaining experience in collaborative problem solving. Additional classes in specific track specializations are available. For example, Information Assurance (INAS) is a track a person can specialize in with courses from the Applied Information Technology Master’s Program.

Graduate Certificate in Interactive Media Design

Interactive Media Design, an online graduate certificate program, offers professionals, artists and educators the opportunity to advance their interactive media design knowledge and skills. Students complete four graduate-level studio art courses which address the front-end design and production of Web sites and multimedia.

ART 765 Graduate Design for the WWW is recognized as meeting Quality Matters™ review standards. The Quality Matters™ program is a faculty-centered peer course review quality assurance process for online learning. Review criteria are linked to external standards; criteria and process are supported through instructional design principles; and the process is vetted by faculty experts. Quality Matters is sponsored by MarylandOnline and was funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.

All required courses for the certificate are delivered online through the Blackboard environment, permitting students from remote locations to complete the certificate without attending classes at the main campus. Students are expected to have basic to mid-level computer skills. Access to a suitable computer with Internet service is required, and a high-speed Internet connection is recommended.

The Interactive Media Design certificate is designed to complement a graduate degree program of study or may be completed as a stand-alone certificate for individuals seeking additional academic study for professional growth or career advancement.
Interactive Media Design course topics include:
  • The impact and management of visual communication through the use of photography, illustration, typographical design and layout design
  • The history of graphic design and it’s relevance to current and future trends in website design
  • Website usability and information architecture theories and practice
  • The impact of color and use of color theory and color forecasting in design for electronic media display
  • The appropriate use of current industry standard interactive media design software applications
  • Copyright laws as they apply to the use of photographs, illustrations, multimedia and video delivered via the Internet
