Goal 1:
Develop and promote a respectful campus climate and provide
services that appreciate and celebrate differences.
Increase programming sensitive to the needs of
diverse groups and strategically develop programs to broaden
the experiences that include all students.

student groups and organizations with particular attention

experience for faculty and staff of color and

Establish a link “commitment to diversity” or
“diversity” on the home page of Towson University’s web
site. The link should include URL’s that provide links to
the vision statement for diversity, educational/student
development rationale and appropriate campus offices and
resources.
Establish a Multicultural Center to provide
centralized support for the many various diverse campus
groups (students, faculty and staff). This includes the
appropriate staffing and resources to facilitate the
connections of these groups.

staff and faculty to understand their own and other cultures.
Include diversity training for faculty and
staff during the first few weeks of employment, as well as
part of ongoing faculty and staff development.
Provide educational briefings for faculty on
framing content of courses through a diverse perspective
(curriculum transformation, cooperative learning, learning
acquisition skills valued by other cultures).
Include diversity component in the programming
for future faculty and staff leadership groups.

4: Enroll, retain and graduate culturally diverse students to
support Towson University's mission as "Maryland's Metropolitan
University."
Study the enrollment of
Black, Hispanic, and other minority students from Maryland
by county of origin, looking for opportunities for focused
student recruiting to increase the representation of this
group of students. Allocate/reallocate resources to recruit
students from counties and states with diverse populations.
Add Spanish language option to telephone lines on campus
(2000 extension). Explore the possibility of requiring at
least one Admissions’ counselor to be able to speak Spanish
fluently.

5: Recruit, hire, and retain culturally diverse employees
across all levels and areas of the University.
Search committees
should develop a recruitment plan and strategies to address
underutilization and ensure the establishment of a diverse

Include in the
recruitment packet Towson University’s vision statement for
diversity and the name/s of appropriate individuals to
contact for additional information.
Implement a training
process that will ensure that ALL hiring managers and/or
search committees have received appropriate training
regarding Towson University’s commitment to diversity in
connection with representation of staff.
Enhance existing
mentoring programs for faculty to prepare a diverse pool of
faculty for future promotional opportunities.
