Towson University seeks applicants for chairperson of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies to begin in summer 2013. Applicants should have excellent records in teaching and a strong record in scholarship appropriate to appointment as a Professor with tenure.

Position:
The Chairperson, who reports to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, works collaboratively with faculty, manages the day-to-day operations of the department, promotes faculty professional development and scholarship, fosters appropriate change and program expansion, advocates for the academic mission, values, and needs of the department, college and university, and engages in outreach to external constituencies in the Baltimore metropolitan region and the State of Maryland.

The Chairperson is appointed to a three-year term, subject to annual review and evaluation by the Dean in collaboration with department faculty. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:
Ph.D. in appropriate field. Significant administrative experience and a leadership style reflecting feminist values are desirable. The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies currently offers a BA in four concentrations: (1) Health and Sexuality (2) Culture and Creativity (3) Diversity and Global Contexts (4) Leadership and Community and a MS in three areas (1) Health and Sexuality (2) International Contexts and (3) Leadership and Social Change. Our preference is for an interdisciplinary scholar with a broad research agenda. Applicants should be competent in one or more of our areas of concentration. We also welcome scholars who could add to the program in the areas of transnational feminism, queer theory, LGBT studies, masculinity studies, transgender studies, race/ethnic studies, or cultural criticism.

The ideal candidate will have had success in developing and expanding programs and should be able to contribute to Towson’s mission as a Metropolitan University by building relationships within the broader community.
