New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation for freshmen begins on Thursday, August 27 2009 and continues through Saturday, August 29 2009. All daytime events of all three days are required for freshmen.  

New transfer students are welcome to participate in orientation events as well. 

All new students are encouraged to participate in all of the events of Welcome to Towson, our program of welcome for all TU students – new and returning. Welcome to Towson includes all of the events of orientation, the first week of classes, and the Labor Day Weekend (we call it Labor-Stay).   

Opening Weekend Events (schedule subject to change)

Welcome to Towson! New Student Orientation for freshmen begins on Thursday, August 27, 2009 and continues through the first week of class. Events on Thursday, August 27, Friday, August 28, and Saturday, August 29 are required for all freshmen (freshmen includes those students enrolled in the Towson University Freshmen Transition Program). Students are encouraged to participate in all events through the weekend including events on Sunday, August 30.

Except for the Friday FYE/OL meetings, all events are open to new transfer students as well.

Thursday, August 27
GETTING STARTED


Freshman Orientation Packet Pick-Up
9am – 9pm, University Union, Chesapeake Rooms
All freshmen pick up their orientation packet, including important individual information regarding required orientation events. (Students must pick up their packet in person)

Freshman Resident Move-In
9am – 5pm, Residence Halls
All freshmen resident students move in to their residence halls.

Welcome to Towson Resource Fair
9am – 5pm, University Union, Potomac Lounge

New Commuter/Transfer Student Meeting and Picnic
Noon – 1:30pm, Burdick Field Tent
All freshmen and transfer commuter students are invited to attend a FREE lunch to learn about the services and opportunities available to commuter students. RSVP by calling 410-704-3307.

Disability Support Services Orientation Meeting
4:30 – 6 pm, University Union, Patuxent Room
Meet the staff and learn more about the services offered at Towson University for students with disabilities. There will be a meet and greet, a workshop for new students and an information session for parents. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Disability Support Services at 410-704-2638.

Residence Hall Floor Meetings
7 – 8:30 pm, Residence Halls
Exact times vary. All freshman resident students should check with their resident assistant upon moving in to clarify exact times.

Welcome Carnival
8 – 10:30 pm, Burdick Field
Come out to this annual event with carnival food, games, and a petting zoo. Students-only event.

Target After-Hours Shopping Event
10 pm – Midnight
Grab things you forgot and pick up some fun new stuff as well. Students-only event. Shuttles will leave from the carnival.

Friday, August 28
ACADEMIC TRANSITIONS


Late Orientation Packet Pick-up
8 – 9:30am, University Union Chesapeake Rooms
Orientation packet includes important individual information regarding required orientation events.

Freshmen FYE/OL Meeting I
9 – 11:30am, Meeting location listed on student course schedule under ORIE305
A students-only event. All freshmen meet in their First-Year Experience (FYE) group to be introduced to their FYE faculty adviser and Orientation Leader (OL). Students will review their first term class schedule at this meeting and receive other important information.

Lunch Break
11:30am – 1:30pm
Newell Dining, Glen Dining and Susquehanna Dining are open.

Freshmen FYE/OL Meeting II
1:30–3pm, same location as Meeting I
A students-only event.

Walk to Towson Center Arena
3 – 4pm
Orientation Leaders will direct students as they walk to the Towson Center Arena for New Student Convocation.

New Student Convocation
4 – 5pm, Towson Center Arena
New Student Convocation marks the official beginning to the student academic experience and is a required event for new students. Families are also welcome.

Parent and Family Fond Farewell
5 – 6pm
Students and families say goodbye to one another. Families are asked to leave campus by 6pm. Students continue with Welcome to Towson events.

Friday Night Live
8 & 9:30pm
Events run concurrently:
• HRL Laugh Attack featuring comedian and Towson Alum Amy Shumer, Stephens Auditorium
• Think Fast Game Show. Learn about Towson and win big money! University Union, Chesapeake Rooms
Freshmen will travel together with their RA to participate in both events.

New Student Conference

New Student Conference Keynote Speaker Bertice Berry
10am – 11:30am, Towson Center
(Required event - Students will meet prior to 10am and travel together with their OL.)

Sociologist, and award winning lecturer Bertice Berry, Ph.D., is one of the most sought after lecturers in the country. She combines her skills as a sociologist and researcher with her ability to make her audiences think and laugh at the same time. She is the best-selling author of the inspirational memoir, I'm On My Way, But Your Foot Is On My Head, four novels and two humor books. You’ll laugh, you’ll feel, you’ll be inspired, and one thing is for certain – you’ll leave much differently than you came.

1 – 5pm, University Union
A detailed copy of the schedule will be distributed at the morning meeting. Students choose from a variety of topics. Each event will include chances to win a variety of cool prizes such as iPods, movie passes, TU gear, and more.

Play casino games and win prizes – simple as that. Prizes include an iPod Touch, flat screen TV, Wii, TU gear and more. Students-only event.

Sunday, August 31
EXPLORING TOWSON


Back to School Rally
Noon – 6pm, Towson Town Center Mall
Students are invited to the Towson Town Center for a Back to School Rally! The first 1,500 students to attend will receive a free goodie bag full of retailer offers. Various events will be held throughout the day including fashion shows at 3 and 5pm, model search, make-up demonstrations and more! The Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders will also make a special appearance. Prizes will be distributed at the top of each hour! Students must present TU OneCard in order to collect free goodie bags and prizes.

Field Day
4-6:00pm, Burdick Field, Rain Location Burdick Gyms
Stop by Burdick Field and play all of your favorite games that you used to when you were a kid! There will be relay races, kickball, Frisbee, and much more! If gym class games were never really your thing stop for some giveaways and free food. You will also have the opportunity to find out more information about all of Campus Recreation Services programs!

Welcome Concert
6:30–9pm, Speaker’s Circle
Sit out on the hill and enjoy a free concert. Bring a blanket to sit on and enjoy a night of music under the stars! A student-only event.
