Center for GIS
History
In 1984 Dr. John M. Morgan, III, established a GIS lab within Towson University’s Department of Geography and Environmental Planning to support the University’s GIS and related courses.
Under Dr. Morgan’s direction, the lab began providing professional GIS services to several Maryland state agencies.
In 1988, Dr. Morgan hosted Maryland’s first statewide GIS conference at Towson University in an effort to bring together GIS professionals for networking and information exchange. Responding to a growing need within state government for applied GIS services, in 1992 Dr. Morgan founded the Towson University Center for Geographic Information Sciences (CGIS).
Since that time, CGIS has grown into a fully staffed, highly qualified business center that has been helping government agencies, businesses, and non-profit organizations make GIS relevant and useful to their mission.
CGIS is helping Towson University become Maryland’s Metropolitan University by engaging in partnerships that expand the University’s boundaries and business outreach, strengthen government linkages, and assist with serving Maryland’s specialized workforce needs.
