Center for GIS

Partnerships

CGIS has formed strong partnerships with the following organizations that deliver geospatial resources to the Maryland and Mid-Atlantic region.

Maryland State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC)

The Maryland State Geographic Information Committee—MSGIC—represents all GIS user sectors in Maryland. CGIS has been active in MSGIC since its inception in 1992 and has partnered with MSGIC on significant NSDI cooperative agreement grant projects since 2000. Recent NSDI projects include The National Map, and developing Strategic and Business Plans for Statewide GIS Coordination in Maryland for the Fifty States Initiative.

Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)

For nearly a decade CGIS and MEMA have worked together to develop a flexible, coordinated foundation of spatial data and applications that support emergency management functions. Specific projects include
  • Hurricane storm surge inundation maps
  • GIS analysis capabilities
  • Internet mapping services
  • Updates to the statewide Hazard Analysis
  • Development of the statewide Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment
  • Development of the Maryland Emergency Geographic Information Network (MEGIN) pilot
  • Collaboration on the Emergency Management Mapping Application© (EMMA©) developed by CGIS
  • Maryland Department of Transportation MDOT (include ORE, SHA, MAA, MTA)

CGIS assists the Maryland Department of Transportation by providing on-site GIS services and staff to the State Highway Administration (SHA) and has managed a variety of GIS and mapping projects. Other recent projects include development of an interactive map-enabled Web Site for the Office of Real Estate, a GIS needs assessment and implementation for Maryland Aviation Administration’s Airport Engineering Information System (AEIS), and a GIS needs assessment for the Maryland Transit Administration.

    ESRI

CGIS continues to enjoy an active partnership with Environmental Systems Research Institute—ESRI—both as an ESRI Authorized Partner Education Center and as a user of ESRI’s cutting-edge products for developing innovative business and government solutions.

U.S. Geological Survey/Federal Geographic Data Committee/National Spatial Data Infrastructure (USGS/FGDC/NSDI)

Since 2000 CGIS has partnered with MSGIC on a series of USGS/FGDC/NSDI cooperative agreement grants to create and maintain Maryland’s metadata clearinghouse at www.Marylandgis.net, create the Maryland Mapping Resource Guide (MMRG) for sharing metadata, develop a method for contributing Maryland’s centerline data and orthoimagery to The National Map, and develop a strategic plan and a business plan for GIS Coordination in Maryland.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

CGIS has worked with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources since 1998 on a variety of GIS and Web mapping services. Recent projects include Maryland Shorelines Online for the Coastal Zone Management division and extensive geologic mapping for the Maryland Geological Survey.

Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE)

CGIS began working with the Maryland Department of the Environment in 1999. Projects include developing a GIS database of high-hazard dams, creating a Web site and a registry system for the Environmental Restoration and Redevelopment Program (ERRP), performing a waste management needs assessment, and developing an interactive map-enabled Web Site for the Smart Growth initiative.
