Custom Cartography
Cartography is the art and science of creating maps to visually represent geographic themes.
CGIS combines the art of design with the science of GIS technology to create custom maps for diverse uses. Here are a few examples.
- CGIS created large-scale land use/land cover maps of the lower Eastern Shore for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
- CGIS crafted the maps included in Places from the Past: The Tradition of Gardez Bien in Montgomery County, Maryland, which won the Maryland Historical Trust 2002 Heritage Book Award and the County Preservation award for the same year.
- CGIS provided map layer compilation and cartography assistance to the Maryland Geological Survey for the Mid-Atlantic Carbon Sequestration Partnership, the State Geologic Survey Mapping Component of United States Geological Survey’s STATEMAP, and the Maryland Physiographic Map.
