doorTU-CGIS is a fully staffed, highly qualified business center that helps make GIS accessible, relevant, and useful to the missions of government agencies, businesses, and non-profit organizations. TU-CGIS is one of the highly successful centers that form the cornerstones of the Division of Economic and Community Outreach (DECO), which was created in 2004 to forge stronger links between the University and the community it serves. DECO and TU-CGIS engage in partnerships that expand the University’s boundaries and business outreach, strengthen government linkages, and assist with serving Maryland’s specialized workforce needs.

Along with existing state-of-the-market technology infrastructure to support data collaboration and distribution, as well as image processing, TU-CGIS resources include the critical mass and diversity of experienced staff required deliver a full suite of innovative solutions to any organization that wants to establish a GIS or expand their current GIS capabilities.

The organization’s team of approximately 35 full-time, degreed professionals includes certified Project Management Professionals, GIS Specialists and GIS Programmers, IT Systems Specialists, Multimedia Coordinator and Graphic Designer, and Technical Writer, among others, who consistently deliver their best work to clients and are firmly committed to empowering clients to use GIS technology to its full potential.

TU-CGIS works with proven, industry standard products, including a full suite of ESRI GIS software, to support GIS, image processing, and map-enabled Web site design. TU-CGIS resources include existing technology infrastructure to support data distribution and collaboration, along with the critical mass and diversity of experienced staff to provide services required for:

  • GIS database development;
  • Application development (Web and desktop);
  • Spatial Analysis;
  • Enterprise GIS Implementations;
  • GIS Training.

Towson University and CGIS have served as a GIS Hub for GIS activities in Maryland since 1988 through TUgis, the annual statewide GIS conference, and through the work that TU-CGIS accomplishes for Maryland’s agencies. TU-CGIS works extensively with these agencies and other organizations to integrate GIS into business processes across the enterprise. TU-CGIS serves as a technical GIS resource to the Maryland State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC), Maryland’s all-volunteer GIS coordinating committee. TU-CGIS hosts many components of Maryland’s State Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) and is actively engaged in efforts to establish MD iMap, Maryland’s coordinated, statewide GIS base map.
