Comma Splices and Fused Sentences - Exercise 4

Directions:The sentences below are either correct compound sentences or incorrect comma splices or fused sentences. Write “correct” next to any correct compound sentences. Identify all incorrect sentences as either “comma splice” or “fused sentence” and then repair them by making them correct compound sentences.

1. The crisis was very serious, but it was unlikely to lead to war.



2. I am considering a career in psychology, however I am not sure I will like the work.



3. Smokers fall victim to many ailments they often get bronchitis and nagging coughs.



4. Marilyn Monroe’s death from an overdose shocked her fans, she was beautiful, wealthy, and apparently happy.



5. The concert will begin at noon and three sopranos will perform.



6. The company was losing business, as a result, some employees were laid off.



7. Wheat was planted yesterday; in addition, the oats were harvested.



8. Fort Smith is a busy city, many conventions are held there each year.



9. The witness saw the license plate; he did not see the car’s driver.



10. Dr. Varga teaches an interesting class in medieval history his students always give him a high evaluation.
