The College Board developed ACCUPLACERŽ Computerized Placement
Tests (CPTs) to
provide information about your level of skill in reading,
writing, and mathematics. Towson University will use the scores
you receive and other information that you provide to help
determine the mathematics and/or reading courses most
appropriate for you at this time.
The tests are
given to entering freshmen and transfer students with fewer than
30 units and any applicants referred by the Admissions Office. Exemption from testing is based on SAT scores, the possession of
30 or more transfer units, or the transfer of college-level
freshman composition or mathematics courses.
Scoring Report
After you have completed the tests, you will see a report of your
scores on the screen. For the reading and mathematics
multiple-choice test batteries, the total right
score shows how many of the questions you could expect to
answer correctly if you took a test made up of 120 questions.
Your scores can only be obtained through Towson University.
It is important
that you answer each question to the best of your ability.
Although you neither pass nor fail these tests, scores are used
in part to determine course placement. Students placed in
developmental courses must successfully complete those courses
within the first four semesters of enrollment.
Special Arrangements for Students with Disabilities
If you have a documented disability that would prevent you from
taking the test on our campus under standard conditions, you may request
accommodations through Disability Support Services. Accommodated
testing is offered by appointment after appropriate
documentation has been submitted and reviewed. No charge is
made for these arrangements. Extended
testing time is already provided for the test.A
calculator is also provided during math testing; it appears
when calculator use
is appropriate.

Test Regulations and Confidentiality
Before taking the tests you
will be asked to confirm that you have read the testing
regulations and that you agree to comply with them.
Please review
the Testing Rules and Conditions that follow the sample
questions. Your test
scores and the information you provide when taking the tests
will only be provided to The College Board, to Towson
University, and to the state as a part of Towson University’s
score profile to meet state reporting requirements. The College
Board may also use it for research and training purposes. Your
test information will not be disclosed for any other purpose
without your permission. If you have any questions about
confidentiality, please see your test administrator.
Adaptive Testing
Since Each
multiple-choice test is adaptive, the computer will
automatically determines which questions are presented to you
based on your responses to prior questions. This technique
selects just the right questions to ask without being too easy
or too difficult. Because the test works this way, you must
answer every question when it is first given. Each test is
un-timed so that you can give each question as much thought as
you wish. However, once you have selected and confirmed your
answer, you cannot return to that question. If you do not know
the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more of the
choices.
Answering the Questions
Because you take the ACCUPLACERŽ tests on a computer, you do not
have to answer as many questions as on traditional
paper-and-pencil exams. The number of questions on the tests
range from 12-25. The questions appear one at a time on the
computer screen. Since most questions are multiple choice, all
you have to do is use the ENTER key or mouse to select an
answer. When you have completed the question and confirmed your
answer, a new screen will appear with your next question.
